Ex-head of SME bank received 2 years in prison for embezzlement of ₽1 billion

The Central Bank of Russia revoked the banking license from SME CB in 2017 due to an acute liquidity shortage. The regulator revealed the complete loss of the bank's own funds and the inability to satisfy the creditors' claims for monetary obligations.

The Arbitration Court of the Moscow District on August 23, 2024 confirmed the decision of the lower instances to bring to subsidiary liability four former heads of the bank at the request of the DIA, which acts as the bankruptcy trustee. It was decided to recover ₽629 million from the persons who controlled the bank.

Those brought to justice included: former board member Tatyana Tabachenkova, ex-chairman of the board of directors Ivan Ulyanov and former member of the credit committee Alexei Krivtsov. At the same time, the cassation court overturned the decision to refuse the DIA to bring to subsidiary liability the ex-member of the bank's board of directors Tatyana Pavlyuchenkova, sending the case in this part for a new consideration.

The Ninth Arbitration Court of Appeal on April 21, 2024 upheld the decision of the Moscow Arbitration Court of February 9 to recover ₽629 million from four former SME leaders. During the trial, it was established that the actions of the bank's management were systematic and led to a significant deterioration in the financial situation of the credit institution.[1]
