Biography

Was born in 1946 in Leningrad in family of the historian Valentin Kovalchuk who was engaged in studying of the Siege of Leningrad. Mother is Miryam Abramovna, too was a historian and worked at an istfaka of LGU.

In 1965 arrived on physical faculty of the Leningrad university where and go the younger brother Yury Kovalchuk filed 4 years later documents.

Since 1973 worked at Institute of a crystallography of Shubnikov of Academy of Sciences of the USSR. At first it was appointed the trainee-researcher, in a year - the salaried employee of institute.

In Moscow it came to a postgraduate study and finished it in 1978. In 10 years of work at institute in 1987 it became the manager of laboratory.

In 1988 it stopped working on the doctoral dissertation, however before protection received sharply negative review from the academician A.M. Afanasyev.

In 1998 headed Institute of a crystallography.

In 2007 he is given appointment to the post of the vice president of RAS. However to enter to this position, he should be the academician, i.e. the full member. However vote of academicians was not in its advantage.

Since 2001 — the scientific secretary of council for science and high technologies under the President of the Russian Federation.

Since February, 2005 — the director of Kurchatov Institute scientific center. Member of board of the Ministry of Education and Science, head of a chair of physics of nanosystems of MSU, Chief Editor of the Kristallografiya magazine and also Deputy Chief Editor of the Poverkhnost magazine.

Doctor of physical and mathematical sciences, professor, corresponding member of RAS. Author more than 200 scientific publications.

Since 2010 member of council of Skolkovo Foundation.

Awards

In 2006 it is awarded with an order "For Merit to the Fatherland" 4th Class.

Family

The wife - Elena Yurevna Polyakova – is a specialist in the history of Ireland. In December, 1968 the son - Kirill Kovalchuk was born.

The younger brother is Kovalchuk Yury Valentinovich.
