Since 2014, the rector of the Higher School of Economics has been appointed by the government. Interestingly, Mr. Kuzminov himself promoted this system: when the 5-100 university support program was launched in 2012, he stated that participating universities should give up part of independence, because they will receive funding from the state.
Mr. Kuzminov said in a statement to employees and students: "I want to leave now, because there is still something I want to do in science, in project work, and I feel the strength for this... If it were not for managerial responsibility and burden, burning not only time, but also emotions, I could write ten more books. "
In his statement, Yaroslav Kuzminov admitted that over the years of work he "had to make important, sometimes tough decisions." He asked for forgiveness "from those whom he offended or was inattentive to," but emphasized that he "did not make a decision once" that would contradict the interests of the university, the professorial corporation, students and "my beliefs."
