2021: Position assignment of the Chief Data Officer in State Department of the USA
At the beginning of January, 2021 it became known that U.S. State Department appointed Mathew Graviss, the doctor of philosophy, the system engineer with long-term work experience on several executive positions in the Ministry of internal security, to a position of the first permanent Chief Data Officer.
I think that Graviss really has all those qualities which we want to see in the Chief Data Officer (CDO) to perform the work effectively, - Janis de Garmo who within several months was engaged in search of the suitable candidacy noted. - But I think that one of the main lines in which it differed for me from the others is that he really wants to give to the staff of the agency an opportunity to use data for problem solving and to collect information for solving of tasks. |
Pointing to the previous work experience in the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Graviss told that he well understands in what direction the state should move. After service in Management of customs and boundary protection of the USA and in Management of transport security, Graviss worked recently in Service of nationality and immigration of the USA (USCIS) where he also was the first who worked at a position of the Chief Data Officer. According to him, this experience was at the same time difficult and useful, but he looks forward to an opportunity to plunge into work with data in State Department.
I saw a huge opportunity to have a real impact on foreign policy space. The global landscape quickly changes, - he told, having added that it separates de Garmo's intention to use data and analytics that "really to strengthen and accelerate adoption of foreign policy solutions". |
Recognized De Garmo that the Center of analytics does not cope with all tasks necessary for effective data processing therefore big lag on projects is observed. It is expected that new approach to data management and appointment to a new position of the specialist will allow to reach complete democratization of data.[1]
