Biography

2011-2012: Detention and sentence

Brothers Dmitry and Yevgeny Popelyshey were arrested in 2011 on suspicion of organizing hacker attacks, which affected more than 170 clients of large Russian banks. Then they withdrew about 13 million rubles from bank accounts. The hackers pleaded guilty, and in September 2012, a court sentenced them to six years probation with a probationary period of five years.

2015: Re-detention

In 2015, Dmitry and Yevgeny Popelyshy were re-detained. They were charged with malware creation, improper access to information and fraud.

2019: Kaspersky Lab employee accused of forcing bank account hacking

On September 20, 2019, it became known that hacker Dmitry Popelysh, who, together with his twin brother Yevgeny, is accused of stealing more than 12 million rubles from bank clients, accused former Kaspersky Lab employee Ruslan Stoyanov of forcing bank accounts to be hacked.

Popelysh said that he sent a corresponding complaint to the head of the  Russian Investigative Committee, Alexander  Bastrykin. According to the hacker, the criminal case against him and his twin brother Eugene was fabricated.

Dmitry Popelysh claims that Ruslan Stoyanov blackmailed and threatened hackers to steal money from bank accounts. Popelysh also spoke about this when compiling a confession in 2015, but did not name the employee of Kaspersky Lab. Stoyanov considers the accusations unfounded.

Ruslan Stoyanov, the former head of Kaspersky Lab's computer incident investigation department, participated in a technical examination of criminal cases against the Popelysh brothers, but a few years later he himself was convicted of high treason.

According to RBC, citing a person who participated in the investigation of the criminal case against the Popelysh brothers , initially Dmitry Popelysh accused not only Ruslan Stoyanov.[1]
