2025: Sentence - 3 years in prison for bribe
Three years in prison were received by the former vice-rector of the Volga Research Medical University Sergei Savelov for receiving a bribe on an especially large scale. The conviction was passed in Nizhny Novgorod in mid-June 2025 based on the results of the consideration of the criminal case.
According to RBC, the investigation and the court established that the convict received funds from a representative of an organization engaged in ventilation systems. The bribe amounted to ₽550 thousand for the period from 2017 to 2019.
Savelov received money for a guaranteed victory at auctions held by the university. The corruption scheme also included the conclusion of direct contracts bypassing competitive procedures.
The bribe provided for unhindered acceptance of work on completed contracts. The former vice-rector ensured that there were no complaints about the quality of the work performed by the contractor.
The court sentenced the convict to serve time in a maximum security colony. Additionally, a fine of ₽2,7 million was imposed for the crime committed.
Another vice-rector of the university, Sergei Vozhik, and the head of the university's contract service, Vyacheslav Matveichev, are under investigation. Employees were detained in March 2025 on suspicion of corruption crimes.
It was previously established that in 2021, university employees entered into a conspiracy with the director of a commercial organization. The purpose of the criminal group was the theft of budget funds allocated under the federal program.
The stolen funds were intended for the purchase of expensive medical equipment for the university. The accomplices prepared documents with inflated prices for equipment from affiliated legal entities.
The organized group ensured that a certain company won the auction for the supply of medical equipment. Manipulation of the tender documentation made it possible to implement a corruption scheme.
PIMU rector Nikolai Karjakin commented on the detentions of university employees and emphasized his readiness to cooperate with law enforcement agencies. The university leadership announced its interest in establishing the truth on all episodes as soon as possible.[1]
