2025: Arrest in the case of fraud with the supply of medical equipment worth millions of rubles

The first vice-rector of the Volga Research Medical University (PIMU), Sergei Vozhik, was detained in a fraud case related to the purchase of medical equipment. Together with him, law enforcement agencies detained the head of the contract service of the university. According to the investigation, the amount of damage exceeded ₽7 million. This became known on March 13, 2025.

According to RIA Novosti, citing the investigation department of the RF IC in the Nizhny Novgorod region, the head of a commercial organization was also detained together with representatives of the university. The Moscow District Court of Nizhny Novgorod arrested Sergei Vozhik for two months, until May 12, 2025,

The preliminary investigation established that in 2021, PIMU employees as part of an organized group, together with the director of a commercial company, stole budget funds allocated under the federal program for the purchase of expensive medical equipment. The group prepared documents with inflated prices for equipment from affiliated legal entities and secured a victory in the auction of the accomplice company.

After the auction, a contract was signed between the Volga Research Medical University and a commercial organization for the supply of bicycle ergometers in the amount of over ₽7 million. The funds were transferred to the account of a commercial company and then distributed among the members of the organized group.

On the fact of the revealed fraudulent actions against the employees of PIMU and the director of the organization for the sale of medical devices, a criminal case was initiated under Part 4 of Article 159 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation - fraud committed by an organized group. This article provides for punishment in the form of imprisonment for up to ten years with a fine of up to ₽1 million or in the amount of the convict's salary or other income for a period of up to three years or without it.

The press service of the Volga Research Medical University reported that investigative actions are being carried out at the educational institution, but the university continues to operate normally.[1]
