Georgy Smirnov graduated from the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO).
Career
2011-2021
Georgy Smirnov joined Nordgold in July 2011, in 2021 he was appointed to the position of financial director of the group. Prior to that, he worked in the Sodruzhestvo agro-industrial group, in the X5 Retail Group and the EuroChem holding.
2022: Appointment as CEO of Nordgold
On September 13, 2022, the gold mining company Nordgold announced the change of CEO. Instead of Nikolai Zelensky, who decided to quit in order to focus on his own projects, Georgy Smirnov was appointed.
As of September 2022, Nordgold closes the top 5 gold miners of the Russian Federation. The group also includes assets in Kazakhstan, Guinea and Burkina Faso. The controlling shareholder with a stake of about 52% is Marina Mordashova.
Previously, 99.4% of Nordgold was controlled by businessman Alexei Mordashov and his sons, Kirill and Nikita. At the end of February 2022, he fell under the sanctions of the European Union. In early March 2022, Mordashov transferred control in the gold mining company to his wife and resigned from the company's board of directors.[1]
