Renunciation of Russian citizenship
On October 29, 2022, it became known that the executive director of Revolut, Nikolai Storonsky, decided to renounce Russian citizenship. One of the reasons is the current geopolitical situation.
According to The Telegraph, billionaire Nikolai Storonsky is one of the co-founders of Revolut. The company provides various services in the financial sector, and its value is estimated at $33 billion.
Nick is a British citizen. Earlier this year, he renounced his Russian citizenship by birth, Revolut officials said. |
It is said that this decision may be related to the activities of Storonsky Sr., the father of Nikolai Storonsky. The fact is that Nikolai Mironovich Storonsky (senior) since December 2019 has served as General Director of Gazprom Promgaz JSC. The National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine (SNBOU) said that in this post, Mr. Storonsky "was responsible for the material and financial support of actions that undermine or threaten the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine." And therefore, sanctions were imposed on him.
By the end of October 2022, Revolut is still awaiting a decision on its UK banking licence application, which the company filed back in January 2021. According to Bloomberg, the fears of the British authorities are caused by the Revolut service for trading cryptocurrencies, as well as Storonsky's connection with Russia.
Nikolai Storonsky Jr. became the fourth entrepreneur from among the former and current participants in the Forbes rating to refuse a Russian passport in recent months. In 2022, he took 16th place on the Forbes list with a fortune of approximately $7.1 billion.
Prior to that, billionaire Yuri Milner with a fortune of about $7.3 billion refused Russian citizenship. The same decision was made by entrepreneur Ruben Vardanyan, whose fortune in 2021 was estimated at $1 billion. In addition, the founder of the investment company Freedom Finance Timur Turlov, whose fortune Forbes in 2022 estimated at $2.4 billion, refused a Russian passport.[1]
