2022: Creating implants
As it became known in March 2022, scientists from the Ya. L. Tsivyan Novosibirsk Research Institute of Traumatology and Orthopedics, the Federal Research Center for Fundamental and Translational Medicine and the Institute of Strength Physics and Materials Science of the SB RAS have developed 3D-printed implants with a porous structure and antibacterial coatings based on zinc and silver.
Porous frames of implants are obtained by 3D printing using direct laser sintering (DMLS) technology from powders of titanium alloy Ti-6Al-4V. It is noted that the creation of metal porous matrices used to replace bone defects is an advanced direction in implantology and orthopedic surgery, however, the porous structures of the implants contribute to the penetration and development of periprosthetic infections.
To solve this problem, the employees of IFPM, NIITO and FTM FIC created and investigated antibacterial Zn and Ag-containing calcium-phosphate biopoxides formed by microarc oxidation. Porous coated samples showed no cytotoxic effect on the culture of human pFb fibroblast cells and mouse embryonic fibroblast cells 3T3. The antibacterial activity of Zn and Ag-containing coatings against Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA ATCC 43300) and E. coli (Escherichia coli ATCC 25922) was 100% and 93%, respectively.
We have identified the preservation of the viability of culture cells, which allows us to make a conclusion - the product and its components do not negatively affect the indicator of cellular respiration, which ensures the preservation of cell viability for 48 hours, - TASS quotes Irina Kirilova, deputy director of NIITO for science.[1] |
