2023: System Announcement

On February 23, 2023, Samsung Electronics announced the creation of the 5G NTN (Non-Terrestrial Networks) system, a non-terrestrial communication technology that allows direct information exchange between smartphones and satellites.

To maintain highly reliable communication with satellites in low Earth orbit (LEO), the South Korean company has developed 5G NTN technology using the Exynos Modem 5300 reference hardware platform. It is said about accurate forecasting of the location of satellites and minimizing frequency shifts. The system provides support for two-way text messaging, as well as the ability to transfer images and video materials.

The platform complies with the 3GPP Release 17 standard, which indicates interoperability with solutions offered by global carriers, mobile device manufacturers and chip suppliers. In addition, the possibility of service scalability is declared.

Samsung technology provides the ability to exchange data in hard-to-reach areas, in areas of natural disasters and emergencies. The system will be able to work anywhere in the world - where coverage of traditional cellular networks is not available. The solution can be used as part of unmanned aerial vehicles. The company intends to integrate the technology into its future Exynos series modems.

It is assumed that the implementation of the solution will accelerate the commercialization of 5G satellite communications and pave the way for the era of the Internet of everything (IoE) based on 6G. In the case of narrowband Internet of Things (NB-IoT) devices, the system will eliminate the need for a separate high-power antenna chip, which will provide manufacturers with much more flexibility in terms of the design of gadgets.[1]
