2023: Product Launch
At the end of February 2023, China Mobile and South Korean company KT demonstrated the world's first international 5G roaming VoNR and VoNR + calling service. The service will allow you to translate speech into another language in real time during phone calls.
The VoNR + architecture is based on the 3GPP IMS data link standard. It aims to create a new data channel in the VoNR network to provide users with wider high-definition interactive and video services. In addition, VoNR +, as a new 5G voice architecture, can support a number of new 5G voice service scenarios:
- The intelligent translation service implements real-time communication between users of different languages;
- The "fun call" service allows you to change the virtual avatar, animate gesture effects and emotion function during video calls;
- The 5G video clip service supports user activity management through visual menus;
- AR remote guidance service along with annotation function. AR in video calls allows industry users to improve service efficiency.
Going forward, China Mobile and KT will continue to invest in research into VoNR + technology and business applications and focus on building high-quality and advanced 5G SA networks. China Mobile will interact with other international operators and expand new VoNR + international roaming services. China Mobile will actively promote new VoNR + voice calling apps to support ecosystem development with global partners.
In addition, commercial 5G base stations have been deployed to provide network coverage at conference venues in Beijing and Seoul. During the demonstration, a China Mobile user at a convention center in Seoul made a roaming call to another China Mobile user at a convention center in Beijing. They conducted a high-definition video call and also performed a translation from Chinese to English, "fun calls" and other voice services based on VoNR +.
As of July 2023, with the entry of the 5G SA network into a new phase of large-scale deployment, China Mobile has achieved a significant upgrade of the architecture and capabilities of the network, which allows the operator to implement various communication services. Throughout the history of the development of voice networks, the company has played an active role in technological innovations.
With the introduction of a flexible open architecture, third-party voice applications can be easily integrated, creating Voice as a Platform (VaaP), which will help build a new multi-dimensional 5G voice environment. VoNR + will bring real-time communication enhancements on all fronts, transforming communication from high-definition video calls to zero-trust communications and fully interactive real-time communications. Mobile devices will also expand from smartphones to a wide range of hardware such as wearables, appliances, cars, robots and more[1]
