2021: The announcement of ARC - the system of minimum invasive neuromodulation of ARC
In the middle of February, 2021 the Swiss company Onward provided the system of minimum invasive neuromodulation of ARC which allows to recover the lost functions at patients with injuries of a spinal cord.
ARC therapy can be carried out using implanted (ARCIM) or the external (ARCEX) systems and is intended for the purposeful, programmed stimulation of a spinal cord. During the researches developers found out that such purposeful stimulation can help to recover to people with an injury of a spinal cord not only motor, but also other functions, such as sensitivity and autoregulyation of many aspects of life activity.
The external noninvasive platform under the name ARCEX consists of a wearable stimulator in the form of a plaster and a wireless programmator. It can be used for recovery of movements of brushes and hands and is studied in clinical trials. ARCIM consists of the implanted pulse generator and an electrode which is in direct contact with a spinal cord. Wearable components and the smartwatch manage a system. It is supposed that ARCIM will allow patients to recover skills of walking, statuses, will lower a spastichnost, will improve regulation of arterial blood pressure, sexual function and control of bladder/intestines.
The research STIMO already showed some opportunities of ARCIM: use of new therapy allowed long ago the paralyzed people to stand and go without assistance. In the research Up-LIFT security and efficiency of therapy of ARC in recovery of function of a brush and a hand at people with an injury of a spinal cord will be estimated. Developers assume that if Up-LIFT passes test successfully, by 2023 therapy of ARCEX will become commercially available.[1]
