2025: Inclusion in the register of Russian software

Open vAIR software developed by Aerodisk is included in the register of Russian software of the Ministry of Digital Development, Communications and Mass Media of the Russian Federation (Ministry of Digital Development). The developer announced this on March 14, 2025.

The corresponding entry, number 26455, was entered into the register on February 12, 2025. Open vAIR software corresponds to the following software classes in the registry:

Open vAIR is an open source virtualization and storage software solution for universities, enthusiast developers and small organizations testing the virtualization capabilities of their IT infrastructure.

The Open vAIR platform is built on the principles of Domain-Driven Design (DDD). Each module of the system works autonomously, which ensures stability of operation even if one of the components fails or changes. Thanks to the flexible architecture, Open vAIR is easily refined and complemented by modules such as automation and control tools, which allows you to adapt it to specific business tasks.

It is also easy to set up and use, making it available even to users with minimal administrative experience.

The platform works as an application that can be deployed on any hardware - from servers to home computers, without the need for additional power or specialized hardware. Open vAIR is a fully Russian product, making it a good solution for use in modern regulatory requirements.

With an open API, the platform can be easily integrated into any project, which greatly simplifies the implementation process.

The inclusion of Open vAIR in the register of Russian software is an important step for our company and the entire industry. It opens up opportunities to use our solution in government and corporate projects where compliance with localization requirements is required. It also highlights the growing role of domestic developments in the IT infrastructure: they meet modern market requirements, and also have internal headroom for further growth and development as the IT industry evolves and data management requirements. We also hope that the system will further take one of the central places in the ecosystem of software solutions that the Russian open source community will work on, "said Vyacheslav Volodkovich, General Director of Aerodisk.

2024: Open source release

The company Aero disk"" has released Open source a -version of the control system virtualization IT infrastructures - Open vAIR. The company announced this on November 15, 2024.

The development was a response to the growing demand of customers for an ecosystem of compatible Russian products. Using Open vAIR will be completely free. This will allow, on the one hand, to develop and popularize the standard for managing virtualization and other components of the IT infrastructure, and on the other hand, to provide business with more opportunities to use the ecosystem of Russian solutions.

In addition, the launch of Open vAIR will make a significant contribution to the development of a community of developers and companies interested in creating Russian standards and a culture of developing open source software tools.

The product consists of two large modules. The first is Open vAIR UI, a unified modern graphics control, monitoring and automation system with its own RESTful API, which can be used in other products. The second, Open vAIR backend, is directly responsible for running KVM-based virtual machines, block and file accesses, virtual networks, etc. In the future, Open vAIR UI we see how one of the ecosystem management standards of Russian (and not only) infrastructure products. And we plan to add a high-availability cluster, hyper-converged storage, as well as other methods for ensuring fault tolerance to the backend, "said Alexey Khorokhordin, head of the solution development department.

Open vAIR was created from the end of 2021 using the Domain-Driven Design (DDD) approach to simplify the implementation and development of the tool. The modules in the product are independent of each other, each functional domain is aimed at solving a specific practical problem. Deploying Open vAIR requires a single server or PC, not multiple servers. The solution is implemented as an application, not a separate distribution, and can be installed on almost any computer running Linux of the Ubuntu 20 or Ubuntu 22 distribution.

The product is presented on the company's own server, and is also available on popular repositories.

After downloading and installing, users will receive both a working virtualization management system and access to the code - you can add the functionality of the product and issue a pull request with a description of what and why was added. Then all such proposals will be considered by the development team, which will decide whether to accept the declared upgrade of the tool in its opensource version or not.

The company's developers have carefully investigated the principle of DDD (Domain-Driven Design) in particular, and OpenSource in general, and are ready for an open dialogue with developers, constructive criticism and will fully support contributors who express a desire to work with the product.

We want to gather a community of enthusiastic developers interested in the development of ecosystem standards for Russian solutions. Open vAIR is essentially a constructor from which you can assemble an IT infrastructure with a minimum amount of hardware. In the future, clustering, hyperconvergence, as well as such fault tolerance elements as graceful degradation will be added to its capabilities - in fact, anyone can join their development immediately after publishing the tool in the public domain, - added Alexander Tikhonov, senior developer of OpenSource company "Aerodisk."
