Equipping with capes that hide combat vehicles in the thermal and radar spectrum

On October 8, 2024, the state corporation Rostec announced that Russian troops had received BMD-4M landing vehicles and infantry fighting vehicles BMP-3 with sets of additional protection. The equipment was manufactured at the Kurganmashzavod enterprise, which is part of the High-Precision Complexes holding as part of Rostec.

Additional protection includes reservation enhancement kits and lattice screens. In addition, the machines are equipped with "Capes" - special means of reducing visibility in the thermal and radar spectrum. Such products are made of synthetic fire-resistant material and make it difficult to detect equipment using observation devices, for example, thermal imagers. Thanks to the use of "Capes," the survival rate of equipment in combat conditions is increased.

According to Bekhan Ozdoev, a member of the bureau of the Union of Machine Builders of Russia, industrial director of the Rostec arms cluster, more than 80% of the weapons that are used in the zone of a special operation are manufactured at the enterprises of the state corporation. These are artillery and flamethrower systems, air defense systems, unmanned aerial vehicles, small arms, ammunition and armored vehicles.

For nine months of 2024, Kurganmashzavod increased the volume of BMP and BMD output by 20% compared to the same period of the previous year. The company operates at a high pace, and some workshops operate around the clock. This makes it possible to ensure the effective implementation of the state defense order in accordance with the set deadlines.

Kurganmashzavod sent BMP-3 and BMD-4M combat vehicles equipped with additional drone protection and electronic warfare devices to Russian troops

On August 30, 2024, it became known about the supply of modernized BMP-3 infantry fighting vehicles and BMD-4M landing vehicles to the Russian armed forces. The equipment produced by Kurganmashzavod JSC received enhanced protection from unmanned aerial vehicles and is equipped with electronic warfare systems.

According to RIA Novosti, Kurganmashzavod, which is part of the High-Precision Complexes holding of the Rostec state corporation, delivered as part of the state defense order. New sets of additional protection provide cover for vehicles from UAV attacks from the air, as well as protect the onboard projection from cumulative ammunition.

A feature of the delivery is that additional protection is delivered with the machines, but is mounted directly in the units. This solution allows you to quickly transport equipment on standard cargo platforms without violating dimensional restrictions.

The High-Precision Complexes holding noted that in the first seven months of 2024, the volume of supplies of combat vehicles exceeded the entire volume of 2022 by 1.5 times. Moreover, Kurganmashzavod fulfills additional obligations to supply BMP-3 in excess of the volumes provided for in the schedule.

Along with technical modernization, the manufacturer paid attention to the moral support of military personnel. Together with the new combat vehicles, the crews of the BMP-3 received letters from the plant employees and their children wishing them to return home as soon as possible with a victory. It is especially noted that the letters were also written by employees of the enterprise, whose sons participate in a special military operation.

The delivery of modernized BMP-3 and BMD-4M with enhanced protection against UAV and electronic warfare systems is an important step in increasing the combat capabilities of the Russian ground forces and airborne forces. This is especially true in light of the increasing role of unmanned aerial vehicles in modern military conflicts.[2]

Implementation of mini-UAVs

In August 2024, it became known that miniature unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are BMP-3 being introduced into the armament of an infantry fighting vehicle. This is the result of the work of specialists of the Special Design Bureau of Mechanical Engineering JSC (SKBM), which is part of the High-Precision Complexes holding of the Rostec state corporation. Information about this was confirmed by representatives of the company.

According to TASS, by the end of August 2024, an ode is coordinating draft organizational decisions and a schedule for integrating mini-UAVs into BMP-3. After the completion of type tests, drones will be included in the design documentation of military equipment. This innovative approach will greatly enhance the functionality of the BMP-3 by providing the crew with additional reconnaissance and surveillance capabilities on the battlefield.

Mini-drones introduced into infantry fighting vehicle BMP-3

As previously reported, as part of the program for the modernization of lightly armored vehicles, Rostec planned the integration of unmanned vehicles into weapons, but specific types of vehicles were not disclosed at that time. The introduction of mini-drones into the BMP-3 is one of the key stages of this program.

BMP-3 is the main element of the infantry combat arsenal. The machine, produced by Kurganmashzavod, is capable of transporting three crew members and up to seven paratroopers. It is equipped with a 100 mm gun that can launch guided missiles, as well as several 7.62 mm machine guns. BMP-3 has been in service since 1987 and is successfully used in various climatic conditions.

Rostec handed over to the Russian Ministry of Defense another batch of updated BMP-3. The new vehicles received additional protective elements, including armored screens and anti-cumulative grilles, as well as upgraded guidance devices with thermal imaging cameras.[3]

Russian BMP-3 began to be mass-equipped with drone suppression systems

On June 24, 2024, the High-Precision Complexes holding, part of the Rostec state corporation, announced that infantry fighting vehicles had BMP-3 begun to be mass-equipped with unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) suppression systems. Such equipment is especially in demand in the zone of a special operation.

The Kurganmashzavod of the High-Precision Complexes holding put a new batch of BMP-3 in the troops. The cars received standard sets of additional protection. These are, in particular, anti-cumulative grilles and armor screens. In addition, the equipment includes the "Cape" camouflage kit, which reduces visibility in the thermal and radar spectrum. It is made of synthetic fire-resistant material and makes it difficult to detect the technique using observation devices, including thermal imagers.

According to TASS, BMP-3 are serially equipped with a system for local suppression of drone control lines. There is also an upper hemisphere protection kit. All these solutions increase the combat survivability of the BMP-3, which is especially important in the conditions of sorties of enemy drones "Baba Yaga."

In addition to the supply of new vehicles, Kurganmashzavod is significantly ahead of the schedule for the overhaul of BMP-3, as well as BMD-4M landing vehicles, "says Bekhan Ozdoev, industrial director of the Rostec complex of conventional weapons, ammunition and special chemistry.

It is noted that the first priority for the holding "High-precision complexes" in 2024 remains the execution of the state defense order for the needs of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation. The specialization of the structure is the creation of high-precision systems and weapons systems of the tactical combat zone.[4]
