Deepin (formerly Linux Deepin, Hiweed Linux and Hiwix) is a Linux distribution based on the stable Debian branch.
2022: Independence from the "mother" Debian
On August 26, 2022, it became known that Linux the Deepin attribute, which underlies the "independent import," the Chinese operating system UOS will become completely independent of the "maternal." Debian
Starting with the preliminary version of Deepin 23, the distribution will be assembled on the basis of the Linux kernel and other components with open, source code without the help of communities of users of other distributions. wrote in the Reddit subsection dedicated to the project by a representative of the distribution developer |
As reported, it is logical to assume that UOS, which uses the Deepin base, which claimed the status of a Chinese national operating system, will also finally abandon the use of the developments of the Debian community, one of the oldest Linux distributions.
Deepin (formerly Hiweed Linux) has been using the stable Debian branch as a base since 2015. Before that, the developers relied on another popular one - Ubuntu, which, in turn, itself grew out of Debian.
Deepin's compatibility with Debian gives its user some capabilities, in particular, optimizes the search and installation of additional drivers and applications. This property of it can be especially useful for those who live outside of China. In the assortment of the Deepin branded application store, there is a noticeable bias towards software, which is mainly in demand by users from the Middle Kingdom.
In addition to abandoning the association with Debian, Deepin has announced the transition to its own package format called Linglong, which is expected to minimize typical GNU/Linux dependency problems. The developers note six key features of the format.
Firstly, this is versatility - by assembling the Linglong package once, it can be run in any Linux environment. Programs packaged in Linglong run in an isolated environment (called a sandbox) for security reasons. In addition, an advanced permission management scheme is supported.
The developers also promise support for incremental updates - when not the entire package is downloaded, but only the "difference" between its versions - programs in Linglong containers; simple and convenient tools for creating packages.
The Linglong features described by the creators of the distribution are largely inherent in existing package management systems such as Snappy, Flatpak and AppImage.
Deepin has its own graphical shell DDE (Deepin Desktop Environment) and a number of pre-installed utilities - their number reaches 30 and includes file the Deepin File Manager and the DMovie video player. Deepin Software Center is also available.
Deepin is a free international version of the UOS (Unity Operating System) operating system, which is being developed by the Chinese company UnionTech[1].
