2025: Generation of scanners with built-in "ScanImage"

Elar Corporation on May 20, 2025 introduced a generation of PlanScan scanners designed to solve a wide range of digitization tasks.

ELAR PlanScan universal book scanners are designed to digitize multi-format documents, books and folders, including discarded and damaged materials. This generation of ELAR PlanScan includes significant improvements that increase the efficiency of devices. One of the key features is the laser technology for 3D measurement of the height profile of the original, which allows you to accurately position the illuminators and adjust the focus for free-form objects. By using 60 reference points, this is 20 times more compared to foreign analogues, the altitude profile is more accurate and reliable, and the quality of the received data becomes much higher. This allows you to obtain high-quality images of materials with differences in thickness and complex relief, for example, an ideal picture of text that goes into the spine area on documents with a tight stitch, or scan paintings in frames, where it is important to fix the details of images at each level of the plane - the relief and signatures applied to the frame, and accurate transmission of the artwork itself.

ELAR PlanScan scanners are equipped with a built-in one, software ScanImage which provides all the advantages of ElarScan scanners when working in the software and hardware complex (PAC) format. Open operating system on the base Linux allows you to install additional applications and connect external devices. Software registered register of Russian software Ministry of Digital Development Russia in and has certificates of compatibility with domestic operating systems based on Linux. Support for background processes for exporting and storing files on the built-in PC with the ability to recognize text and delayed post-processing is implemented, which significantly speeds up and simplifies the workflow.

ELAR PlanScan scanners offer many modifications, including models with interchangeable glasses, where flat and V-shaped glass is included, as well as a modification with a deep cradle for heavy sewn originals up to 50 cm thick. Modification P (Manual) is suitable for working with documents that require special attention and manual adjustment. Modification of PA (Manual Automatic) combines manual control and automation of processes, which makes it suitable for digitizing large volumes of materials. Modification * 50, respectively, is designed to work with large-format documents. Scanners support A1 and A2 formats, which allows you to work with documents of various sizes. Network and USB interfaces provide connectivity flexibility to integrate devices into any enterprise IT infrastructure - simplifying the process of digitizing and storing data.

Adaptive lighting with a color index (CRI) of more than 90 guarantees high image quality. CRI is an indicator of compliance with daylight, the higher its value, the more close the lighting system to the reference, which positively affects the naturalness of color reproduction in scanned images - all colors are displayed more natural and realistic. The LiveView camera with a resolution of 8 megapixels allows you to observe in real time the correctness of placing the originals on the scanning surface. This makes it possible to accurately position documents before starting digitization, avoiding obtaining defective images and eliminating the time spent on rescanning, which is especially important when working with non-standard, complex and dimensional materials.

The linear scanning method, in which digitization is carried out in a moving beam of light that moves along the scanned original, allows you to obtain a consistently high resolution and clear picture when working with documents of any format along the entire perimeter of the scanning area.

This generation of ELAR PlanScan scanners is also highly resistant to mechanical influences. The precision focus setting remains the same even when transported, ensuring stable scan quality.

The speed of scanners is an important aspect of their functionality. One of the modes allows the scanner to work in a limited area, which increases the speed of digitizing documents in a small format. In this mode, the beam of light moves within the specified limits without capturing the unused area, which reduces the processing time of the image and increases the overall performance of the system.

An additional plus of the Russian scanner is the possibility of two-way scanning. Here, when a beam of light passes along the original, the next scan begins at the end of the previous pass. This avoids the time it takes to reset the mechanism before each new scan. In addition, ELAR scanners offer a high-speed mode for streaming digitization when the image processing level is not critical. In this mode, the scanner is capable of processing more than 60 frames per second, which allows you to efficiently capture images at a high frequency. This is especially useful when scanning large amounts of information, such as archive arrays, which significantly reduces processing time and improves overall efficiency.

Thus, this generation of ELAR PlanScan scanners opens up opportunities for effective work with documents, contributing to the development of digital technologies in Russia.

2015: ELAR Improves Planetary Scanner

On August 4, 2015, ELAR Corporation announced the development of a pressure glass design for ELAR PlanScan A2V planetary scanners. The advanced module is designed to digitize stitched documents that cannot be fully disclosed without the risk of mechanical damage to the spine.

ELAR Scanner Module PlanScan A2V, 2014

When digitizing paper arrays, in rare cases there were discarded documents with text closely adjacent to the center of the spread. The root density of such originals did not allow scanning of the fully open turn, and a slight shading occurred in the center of the scan image. To eliminate this feature, ELAR engineers have developed a new version of the V-shaped pressure glass, increasing the area of useful scanning space.

"The previous design was two glass blocks, which, when embedded in the clamp module, were connected at the edges. The new design of the optical unit is monolithic. For its implementation, seamless docking of the folded edges of the glasses is carried out with subsequent fixation with a special adhesive composition. Thanks to this design, we have reduced the shadow zone, "said the Igor Mikaelian head of the product department of the Equipment Support and Technical Support Department. ELAR

The corporation invited customers using the PlanScan A2V ELAR planetary scanner to replace only the glass part of the clamp module without changing its main design, which will cost less than purchasing the assembled module.

"Stitched archival businesses require careful handling, so when digitizing them, a V-shaped cradle with an appropriate pressure glass is often used. The new model of the optical unit will improve the quality of scan images, which is especially important when working with archival businesses with a limited disclosure angle. The development of ELAR will be in demand by our customers. This is confirmed by the sales statistics of the ELAR PlanScan A2V scanner, "said Alexander Radchenko, Deputy Commercial Director of ELAR - Head of Department for Work with Cultural Institutions and Archives
