EMC Data Domain Archiver

EMC Data Domain Archiver is the system of long-term data storage for backup and archiving. DD Archiver allows customers to use a single disk system with deduplication for solving of tasks of operational backup and long-term data storage. The offered system provides the new level of operational efficiency, eliminating the costs and difficulties connected with long-term data storage on magnetic tapes. The solution DD Archiver is implemented on the basis of the Data Domain systems leading in the industry and the level of archive storage integrated by single name space for effective storage of backup copies and contemporary records within seven and more years.

The basic information and market situation Release of the new Data Domain Archiver system completely changes approaches to long-term storage of backup copies and contemporary records available to users. Operational backup and recovery usually provide data storage within weeks or months while long-term data storage is measured for months or years. Today the most widespread method of long data storage – record of backup copies on the magnetic tape. In addition to creation for this purpose of separate process in which a lot of things should be done manually such option involves increase in risks at recovery and growth of cost for users. In the last several years copying on disks with deduplication became the best practical approach to operational backup and recovery of information.

Users DD Archiver can select an expanded retention period of data, without sacrificing backup performance, optimizing cost and providing process automation that even more reduces the need for use of magnetic tapes.

Main features of a new product

• In the DD Archiver system the controller from a new solution of EMC Data Domain DD860 and other general architectural Data Domain elements is used that allows to optimize performance, controllability and reliability within single name space.
• Having capacity up to 9.8 Tb / h, the DD Archiver system provides the speed, sufficient to be entered in strict requirements to backup.
• The multi-tier architecture of storage gives the chance to set rules of movement of the outdate data from active level on archive level with high degree of scalability.
• Physical capacity up to 768 Tb can be distributed between storage levels to balance user requirements to system performance and duration of data storage.
• A system offers a unique opportunity of distribution of old data on logical partitions for localization of faults, architecture DD Archiver provides upgrade and migration, a system has a configuration with more detailed disaster recovery and architecture of Data Domain Data Invulnerability Architecture already familiar to users. They are necessary elements of the system developed for long-term storage of backup copies and archives.
• DD Archiver supports methods of archiving of data most widespread today: long-term storage of backup copies and also high scalability of load of the systems of archiving. Among the relocators of data supported DD Archiver and change of workloads – a possibility of use of a system with such popular solutions of archiving as EMC SourceOne and EMC File Management Appliance.

Data Domain DD890 и DD860

EMC Data Domain Global Deduplication Array (GDA) uses two new EMC Data Domain DD890 controllers that turns GDA into the fast system of deduplication of data. GDA supports the program option EMC Data Domain Virtual Tape Library that even more expands number of backup applications (including IBM Tivoli Storage Manager) with which this system can work. Storage systems of the senior class Data Domain DD890 and DD860 with one controller have the capacity, by eight times exceeding competitive solutions. Besides, the Data Domain systems provide the built-in support of the IBM Power servers with operating environment of IBM i and can protect their data and also work in a loading partitioned mode with the majority of products of this line.

Main features of new products

• Data Domain Global Deduplication Array (GDA). The highest capacity – up to 26.3 Tb / h (7300 Mbps) – the new GDA systems allows to save data more than seven times quicker in comparison with a competitive system with two controllers. Thanks to logical capacity up to 28.5 PB and new support of VTL over Fibre Channel of the GDA system are suitable for a broad spectrum of corporate environments.
• The Data Domain DD890 DD860 systems with one controller. The fastest in the class new storage systems with deduplication of DD890 and DD860 have capacity to 14.7 and 9.8 Tb / h respectively. Logical capacity of DD890 reaches 14.2 PB, and DD860 – to 7.1 PB.
• Own support of operating environment of IBM i in Data Domain. EMC offers the fastest systems in the industry with deduplication "on the fly" for operating environments of IBM i (capacity – to 8.1 Tb / h). Effective integration with products of the line of IBM Power allows to implement network solutions of disaster recovery and simultaneous protection of IBM i from the environments opened by the operating room based on one Data Domain system.

Data Domain DD2500, DD4200, DD4500 и DD7200

The new systems of a line Data Domain for backup and archiving of data were announced by EMC on July 11, 2013.

Four systems Data Domain DD2500, DD4200, DD4500 and DD7200 - the average level, are created to replace former models. On performance of innovation exceed them four times, on scalability – ten times. The new systems are supported to 540 data streams that three times exceeds former indicators. Besides, they provide decrease in total cost of ownership by the data warehouse per gigabyte to 38%.

Pavel Karnaukh, the technical area director of backup systems and data recovery of EMC, noted that now the Data Domain systems support backup from SAP HANA Studio through NFS. Thanks to it the SAP HANA database managers can use effective storage of data protection and at the same time retain full control over backup processes.

DD Boost For Oracle RMAN supports Oracle Exadata also SAP in environments now Oracle that allows to execute backup and recovery quicker. Besides, Data Domain can be integrated with applications of archiving OpenText, IBM and Dell. In other words, the Data Domain systems can be unrolled with more than twenty products for archiving of e-mail, data SharePoint, databases and management systems for contents.
