EMC NetWorker 7

EMC announced on October 8, 2010 new software for EMC NetWorker backup, EMC Data Domain Boost integrated with software. Consolidation of these products increases backup speed, simplifies configuring of systems and management of them. The management console of NetWorker provides effective control of all functions of the Data Domain system, including replication of Data Domain for planned monitoring of backup on all platforms. Integrated by software gives new opportunities for users of NetWorker, such as checkpoint restart, the simplified cloning and balancing of loading on a disk, control function by the free capacity of a disk.

EMC Corporation announced in November, 2011 that software users for backup of a corporate class of EMC NetWorker successfully implement integrated solutions from EMC for upgrade of process of backup and as a result significantly accelerate backup and recovery, simplify management, reduce traffic in the local area network, automate postdisaster recovery, refuse tapes and save expenses. Projects of customers confirm continuous improvement of EMC NetWorker which helps users to provide data protection using simple solutions of backup and recovery in management.

Advantages of integration of EMC NetWorker and DD Boost

  • Accelerates backup: improves access of NetWorker to the Data Domain systems, separating deduplication process into parts, using NetWorker storage nodes.
  • Simplifies management of replication: software of EMC Data Domain Replicator from NetWorker management console for creation of schedules and the organization of viewing backup copies as generally and in a secondary environment, including support different the politician of preserving of data allows to manage.
  • Simplifies setup and monitoring: special masters of detection and configuring accelerate setup of the Data Domain systems, and new opportunities of monitoring and the reporting simplify process of system administration.

New opportunities of NetWorker

  • The new simplified cloning: allows to configure and make schedules through the management console of NetWorker Management Console, saving from need to create scripts (but saving flexibility of CLI).
  • Checkpoint restart: allows to resume backup from the moment of a stop, but not to begin everything with the beginning.
  • Improvement of backup on a disk: optimization of use of Advanced File Type devices, including new opportunities of balancing of loading and management of the free capacity of a disk.
  • New option of licensing based on capacity: allows to purchase NetWorker counting on the number of the protected data.

EMC NetWorker 8

EMC officially submitted the eighth version of the software package of backup of NetWorker in July, 2012. Initially this product was developed by the former engineers of SUN Microsystems who founded Legato company in 1989 for network backup of Unix systems. In the last decade of the last century it remained the most widespread solution for data protection in the environment of Solaris and was even included in structure of standard utilities of this OS, however then gradually handed over positions in the market of software of backup under the pressure of the competing products, first of all NetBackup from Veritas (Symantec). The previous seventh version of NetWorker was released in March, 2003 in seven months before EMC purchased Legato, and, thus, an exit of NetWorker 8.0 is the first large product update for those nine years which its development and EMC promotes.

According to reports of IDC, now in the market of software for copying data protection the share of EMC makes 13.6%, and the corporation takes the second place here, more than twice conceding to Symantec (It should be noted that in addition to NetBackup this company releases one more packet of backup of Backup Exec intended for Windows servers). According to EMC, today around the world more than 23 thousand customers use NetWorker for protection of the data.

In new NetWorker the three-level process architecture of backup is cardinally processed, and management of these processes for which only the central server was responsible earlier, is distributed on the NetWorker Storage Node nodes now. As a result, according to developers, load of processors of the central NetWorker server decreased and three times the scalability of a packet as it is not limited to hardware resources of the central server any more improved. Besides, for information storage about backup tasks not files, but a relational database which, by estimates of EMC, consumes five times less processor resources of the server are used now.

The new feature of Client Direct allows to write directly on network backup copies of data from the programs agents of NetWorker set on application servers on drives of disk library and as a result to two times improves the backup speed (in the previous version for this purpose backup copies needed to be written at first on the Storage Node nodes). EMC also improved integration of NetWorker into the hardware solution for backup of Data Domain (DD) due to support in new software of function of acceleration of deduplication (prevention of backup of the same data sets) DD Boost. At the same time unlike Symantec NetBackup and the majority of other packets of backup of a corporate class in NetWorker there is still no own built-in function of deduplication. Apparently, EMC calculates that most of her clients will use NetWorker together with Data Domain.

In NetWorker 8.0 also support of server applications of Microsoft is also improved — the product is capable to execute backup of the latest SQL Server database 2012, including and its cluster configuration to perform 'granular' data recovery of the mail Microsoft Exchange 2010 system, the SharePoint 2010 portal and Hyper-V R2 virtual machines. Besides, judging by responses of participants of beta testing, the interface of new NetWorker became much more convenient and more clear, and programs masters help to configure quickly backup even to those system administrators who have no experience of use of this product.

The new feature of NetWorker under the name multi-tenancy allowing to organize the logical partitions isolated among themselves in the environment of backup, servicing several customers or divisions is intended for providers of cloud services and large enterprises.

In the USA in the minimum EMC NetWorker 8.0 configuration costs 2000 dollars.

EMC NetWorker 8.1

New release - NetWorker 8.1, with the implemented integrated management system for pictures of the file system users can purchase, the press service of EMC reported on July 11, 2013.

As a part of updates of a system the new user interface, function of autodetection and intellectual appointment of storage for pictures of the file system. In new release abilities to integrate with the Data Domain systems are expanded that allows to execute backup 50% faster, and recovery – is 2.5 times faster, than at configurations on the basis of virtual tape libraries.

In the updated form NetWorker provides support of VMware on the basis of the available Avamar services.
