The platform of EMC ViPR provides to service providers and IT departments an opportunity to construct virtual infrastructure of the data warehouse without attraction of a great number of specialists.
- The open expanded architecture allows to use the available IT assets, at the same time laying the foundation for future infrastructure.
- Provides transparent integration with a software-defined data processing center of VMware.
The uniqueness of the platform for software-defined storage EMC ViPR consists in a possibility of simultaneous infrastructure management of data storage (level of management) and the data placed in this infrastructure (level of data).
The controller of EMC ViPR uses the existing storage infrastructure for traditional workloads, and for workloads of the next generation selects new object services of data of ViPR (with access through API- interfaces Amazon S3 or HDFS). Object services of data of ViPR are integrated with OpenStack through Swift and can be executed on the corporate or standard data warehouse.
EMC ViPR provides transparent integration with a software-defined data processing center of VMware via standard industry API interfaces and also provides compatibility with Microsoft and OpenStack.

EMC ViPR v.1.1
On January 30, 2014 the EMC company announced improvement and updating of the software-defined platform of data storage in version 1.1 EMC ViPR.
In the ViPR system 1.1 developers expanded opportunities for work with objects by means of support of Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS) of Data Service. Now customers will be able to unroll HDFS on any file platforms supported by ViPR. It turns the existing data storage infrastructure into storage of Big Data and extends analytics of Hadoop to all data managed by ViPR.
Are included in a packet of support the solution EMC Symmetrix Remote Data Facility (SRDF) which provides remote replication in the crucial environments working under control of ViPR.
The corporation announced also a possibility of free use of the ViPR system in non-productive environments, since January 30, 2014.
EMC ViPR 2.0
The version of the software-defined platform of data storage of EMC ViPR, EMC ViPR 2.0, offers new opportunities which simplify management of the existing and new infrastructures of storage. Simplicity is reached due to the new services of data management providing support of applications of the next generation and analytics of Big Data. ViPR 2.0 facilitates transition to "the third platform" of IT, giving to customers an opportunity of the approved and completely automated management of storage infrastructure.
ViPR also provides integration with the management tools and orchestrations of higher level offered VMware, OpenStack and Microsoft thanks to what the storage system fits into the system of workflows of a data processing center. In the solution ViPR 2.0 new services of management of data units and new opportunities of space replication and distribution are added. It also provides support of standard disks and additional third-party arrays through OpenStack.
Services of data management of ViPR: support of new types of storage systems and new applications
In ViPR not only control functions, but also services of data management are improved. Support of standard disks and support of services of management of block data on the basis of EMC ScaleIO is added to earlier implemented support of object storage and HDFS.
Support of data on several platforms thanks to powerful functions of space scaling of storage which provide data access, their integrity and protection is also added to ViPR 2.0. It means that now services of management of object data of ViPR can work with several locations, offering the most modern functions of space replication and space distribution (the patent application is submitted) for ensuring essentially new level of efficiency and performance. Services of management of object data of ViPR also offer additional functions of ensuring compliance to requirements of different regulators (the state legislation, standards for health care and other industries) and also support of the EMC Centera CAS API interface (Content Addressable Storage). Thanks to it customers of EMC Centera can still use the unique features of long-term storage and compliance which are available in their applications on any platform supported by ViPR without change of the existing software. As a result new services of data management of ViPR provide data access constantly and irrespective of location of users and location of data.
Besides, services of management of block data of ViPR — new services of data management on the basis of EMC ScaleIO software are also added to ViPR 2.0. Block services ViPR add support of block storage to any standard array of storage managed by ViPR.
Advanced ViPR controller: a basis to go to "the third platform"
Now the ViPR controller supports standard disks and a large number of third-party arrays of storage — by means of the built-in support or through the connected module OpenStack Cinder. The complete list of the built-in support of arrays of storage includes EMC, Hitachi Data Systems and Netapp now and also standard storage systems. In addition to it, when installing the connected module OpenStack Cinder the ViPR system supports arrays of Dell, HP and IBM. Thanks to expanded support, ViPR supports the vast majority of the arrays of storage which are available now in the market now. Besides, management from a uniform panel in ViPR 2.0 allows customers to automate and standardize management of the existing infrastructure of storage and at the same time to implement support of the new infrastructure of storage working at a basis the politician.
ViPR 2.0 also expands support of arrays of EMC thanks to the improved integration and administration of EMC VPLEX and EMC RecoverPoint. Data management on several platforms and advanced multi-user functionality for support of geographically distributed systems of storage which are scaled to hundreds of clients in several locations in one namespace is also among the added new features.
Expanded packets for a software-defined storage
Significant changes affected also software packages for a software-defined storage of EMC — ViPR SRM and Service Assurance (SA) Suite. The updated packets give to customers the most evident idea of difficult environments with the equipment of different suppliers. In addition to support of a wide number of the EMC platforms and third-party suppliers, the packet of ViPR SRM provides the improved integration with ViPR and VPLEX thanks to what the organizations have new opportunities of expense allocation between divisions for implementation of the IT as Service model outside SLA. Expanded management of virtual storages from the ViPR console is also among improvements of a packet of ViPR SRM. In SAS 9.3 integration with VMware NSX which provides deep visualization of computing and network infrastructure in physical and virtual environments is implemented.
2015: Opening of the code of the virtual controller of data warehouses of ViPR
May 8, 2015. EMC announced[1] about opening of the system code of SDS ViPR.
The source code ViPR is published under the free license Mozilla Public License 2.0. This first solution of this sort of the EMC developers who were still releasing only commercial products with the closed code.
2016: ViPR Controller 3.0
ViPR Controller 3.0 was developed especially for that customers could pass into DPC, integrating traditional and cloud environments and providing conditions for business transformation. The updates provided today will help customers to upgrade multivendor storage systems, thanks to support more than 50 platforms of storage from EMC and other companies.
