2024: Product Announcement
On April 9, 2024, Google introduced the free artificial intelligence-based Gemini Code Assist tool, designed to help write code. This system has received Automatic Row Completion.
According to TechCrunch, Google previously offered a similar service under the Duet AI brand - the service started working in 2023. After that, the company switched it from the Codey model to the Gemini. It is noted that the appearance of Gemini Code Assist is both a rebranding of the former system and its major update. Access to Gemini Code Assist is provided in plug-in format for VS Code and JetBrains environments.
Google's new AI service is a direct competitor to GitHub Copilot Enterprise. Thanks to a context window with 1 million tokens, the assistant is able not only to offer its own code variants with high accuracy, but also to effectively analyze and correct large fragments of program code.
The Gemini Code Assist tool, as noted, can be further optimized based on the company's internal code base. This will allow you to get even more accurate results. The peculiarity of the new AI system is that it supports code in various repositories (including GitHub, GitLab and Atlassian BitBucket), as well as projects distributed across multiple platforms. In addition, Google is collaborating with a number of companies on the issue of transferring their knowledge bases to Gemini. Thus, over time, the tool's capabilities will expand.
Google also announced the release of CodeGemma, a new open source AI model in its Gemma family: which is configured to generate and edit code. Access to CodeGemma is provided through the cloud-based machine learning platform Vertex AI.[1]
