2021: Announcement of Rapid Concussion Test
In mid-January 2021 Abbott , she released an express test for analysis blood in a traumatic brain injury. According to a press release, this test will help clinicians evaluate patients with suspected mild, TBI including concussion. brain
The test is performed on the Abbott i-STAT Alinity portable platform and results are provided within 15 minutes of placing the plasma in the cartridge for testing. According to the company, a negative result will make it possible to do without a computed tomography of the brain, while a positive result will complement the CT results and help the clinician in assessing.
Abbott analysis requires a small volume of blood drawn from a vein and centrifuged. The resulting plasma is applied to a dough cartridge that is inserted into the i-STAT Alinity instrument. The company said it was also working to create a whole blood test that would not require plasma to be released when used. Abbott believes that the portable test can be used outside of traditional medical facilities to quickly assess head injuries, for example, at sporting events.
Medical professionals have long been waiting for a blood test to assess brain activity, and now it has appeared, "said Dr. Beth McQuiston, medical director of the Abbott diagnostic business. - Any treatment is preceded by diagnosis, and doctors will now be able to obtain important and objective information that will help them provide the best treatment with the prevention of complications and rapid recovery. |
Abbott also intends to obtain permission to use the new test on the company's main laboratory tools, Alinity i and Architect systems.[1]
2016: i-STAT Alinity announcement
In November 2016, Abbott Laboratories developed a portable device that can be used to test blood for various metabolites, including conducting a biochemical blood test and determining the presence of cardiac biomarkers. The device was named i-STAT Alinity.
To conduct a study using this device, you need only two to three drops of blood and about 10 minutes of time (depending on the type of analysis), after which the results will be displayed on the screen.
The blood analyzer received a touchscreen display and a built-in barcode camera to monitor samples and results. Moreover, you can conduct testing anywhere - in the doctor's office, at the bedside, etc.
Abbott notes that to create this blood analyzer, company employees communicated with administrators, doctors and laboratory specialists, which made it possible to understand the main problems and requirements of medical institutions for portable devices for everyday use.
The manufacturer considers the main advantages of i-STAT Alinity to be the following:
- Extensive testing capabilities, ensuring that most combinations of tests are performed with a single cartridge, including new tests in the future, including tests to detect brain diseases, infectious diseases and cancer;
- Enhanced patient safety and compliance features;
- Availability of wireless and wired communication to transmit information for further use in the clinic;
- A cloud service that allows a healthcare institution to monitor the use of a large number of i-STAT Alinity devices and provide ease of transmission and data control;
- The presence of on-screen instructions and a light and sound warning system when critical information appears;
- A reliable design that provides protection against falls and damage when using cleaning products.[2]
