2025: Separation from Intel
The developer of computer vision systems for robots RealSense turned into an independent startup after it separated from the parent company Intel going to the bottom and attracted an investment of $50 million. Intel Capital and MediaTek Innovation funds took part in the funding round. The company will send funds to expand to related markets and develop new solutions in the fields of artificial intelligence, robotics and biometrics. Information in July 2025 appeared on the SiliconANGLE website.[1]
2021: RealSense ID facial recognition system announced
In early January 2021, Intel announced the release of a new face recognition appliance that can be used in retail stores to simplify payment transactions, organize access to premises, etc.
The new system is called RealSense ID. It is based on the RealSense camera (its first version was introduced back in 2014), supplemented by a depth sensor and a neural network that provides face authentication. According to the developers, the new product could find application in ATMs, grocery kiosks, self-service terminals and smart door systems.
According to a press release, the advantage of the RealSense ID device is a high degree of computational autonomy and integration. The user's biometric data is encrypted and processed locally, the face recognition process is launched at the request of the client who has pre-registered with the system. The accompanying neural network prevents forgery attempts using masks, videos and photos, and only one out of a million manages to deceive it. Flat images of a person's face are ignored by the system, since it is able to sense the depth of the stage and form a "voluminous" digital portrait.
Intel claims that false positives are possible in no more than one in a million cases. This is in line with what Face ID offers. Moreover, changes in the face itself, such as an increase in vegetation (mustache, beard) on the face or the appearance of glasses do not affect the effectiveness of the system. In addition, it is able to work in a wide variety of lighting conditions, with people of different height and complexion.
The launch of the RealSense ID system is scheduled for the first quarter of 2021. Its cost is not called by the beginning of January.[2]
