2020: The announcement a blockchain service for identification of counterfeit diamonds in online stores
At the end of August, 2020 the second most popular Chinese online store JD.com together with the British financial technical-company Everledger started a blockchain platform for identification of the counterfeit diamonds which are contained in the jewelry which is on sale in online stores. The solution was received by the name JD Blockchain Anti-counterfeiting and Tracing Platform.
The Gemological institute of America located in California which is engaged in certification of gemstones became one more partner of the project.
Upon purchase of jewelry it is extremely difficult to ordinary person to distinguish this diamond from counterfeit. And when purchase of jewelry happens on the Internet, it is impossible to make it. And especially this problem became relevant in the period of COVID-19 pandemic when many retail stores passed into online. Increase in trust to online purchases is even more important in China where on the Internet there are about 68% of purchases of jewelry to diamonds in comparison with 45% around the world.
For the solution of this problem Everledger suggested to integrate the mechanism of check of diamonds used by Gemological institute of America and technology of protection against fraud based on a blockchain which is applied by JD.com. The new platform which highlights authenticity of stones and their class opposite to goods in online store and mobile application became result of this consolidation.
From the technical point of view, Everledger uses the Hyperledger Fabric blockchain platform open source created for the most different scopes of application.
Everledger and the American institute already cooperated earlier on the similar project. In 2018 they developed the similar platform for the Hong Kong jewelry brand of Chow Tai Fook. Among partners of the company also American retail network Fred Mayer Jewelers, the Indian supplier of Sheetal diamonds and Russian ALROSA.
At the beginning of 2020 Everledger together with ALROSA — the second in value diamond-mining company in the world — started the project allowing to monitor movement of diamonds from the mine to hands of the end buyer.[1]
