2022: System Announcement

On June 21, 2022 , Medtronic released a system to enlarge ligaments on the spine due to various pathologies. The device is called LigaPASS 2.0 and is an assortment of tape connectors for rear thoracolumbal fixation, specially adapted to clinical requirements.

Medtronic has developed a ligament augmentation system, LigaPASS 2.0, due to its positive effect on proximal functional kyphosis (PFC). PFC is called the disturbed position of the spine with a bend to the back. The two main natural bends are in the thoracic and sacral regions, and in contrast to these bends there are two others in the neck and lower back region. PFC is a common postoperative complication in adult surgical spinal deformity that can lead to the development of a more severe form of proximal functional insufficiency (PFN).

The company said a study of 242 adult patients with spinal deformity found that patients treated with ligament augmentation had significantly lower rates of PFC and PFN complications. After one year, the rate of repeat surgeries in adult spinal deformity patients treated with ligament augmentation was only 3.3%, compared with 15.6% in patients not treated with ligament augmentation.

Giving the device breakthrough status demonstrates our continued commitment to innovation in spinal surgery and providing industry-leading solutions that improve patient care and enhance the quality of surgeons. Surgical treatment of spinal deformity in adults provides a significant clinical effect for patients, but unfortunately many of them need revision due to early mechanical failure, said Medtronic Vice President and CEO of Intelligent Data Solutions Dan Wolf.

The LigaPASS 2.0 system can be paired with UNiD's Adaptive Intelligent Spine Platform (ASI), which enables the use of scientific data and artificial intelligence (AI) to help surgeons plan, perform and analyze procedures. System connectors and tapes for the system can also be used in conjunction with the CD Horizon Solera spinal system.[1]
