The use of dual neural bypass technology has begun, which restores movement and sensitivity in paralyzed

On July 28, 2023, specialists from the Feinstein Institute for Medical Research Northwell Health announced the performance of a unique operation using dual neural bypass technology, which made it possible to restore hand movements and sensitivity in a paralyzed patient.

The operation was carried out by 45-year-old Keith Thomas (Keith Thomas) from Massapequa in New York State. In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, he suffered a serious spinal injury while studying in the pool. As a result, the man was completely paralyzed from the chest and below. Thanks to the procedure, Thomas again found the opportunity to control his hands, as well as feel touched.

The use of dual neural bypass technology has begun, which restores movement and sensitivity in paralyzed

At the initial stage, doctors, through functional magnetic resonance imaging, accurately identified the brain regions responsible for both hand movement and tactile sensations. During the 15-hour operation, surgeons then implanted five small microarrays into Thomas' brain, forming a dual neural bypass system. In fact, an electronic bridge has been created that allows the brain to exchange information with other parts of the body.

When a paralyzed man thinks about squeezing his hand, signals from the implants arrive at the computer, where they are processed using artificial intelligence algorithms. The computer then sends pulses to flexible non-invasive electrodes that are superimposed over the spine and in the forearm muscle region. Such stimulation causes the hand to move. At the same time, tiny sensors at the fingertips and palm send information about touch and pressure to the sensory region of the brain, which allows you to return tactile sensations. Researchers hope that in the future, the new technology will help many paralyzed people find the opportunity to move again.[1]

Artificial stem cells implanted in the spine for the first time in the world

At the end of October 2022, in Japan, doctors from Keio University underwent the first surgery in the world to implant induced stem cells in the spine. The operation was successful - the patient feels good.

Scientists did not disclose the diagnosis of the participant in the experiment, his gender and age. It is only known that the person had previously received a spinal injury. During the operation, about 2 million artificial stem cells were implanted under general anesthesia, the total volume of suspension poured into the spine was 0.02 ml. She was injected under general anesthesia directly into the epicenter of the damage.

Artificial stem cells implanted in the spine

IPS cells are cells with induced pluripotency, from which any cell of an adult organism can be obtained. Thus, IPS cells have opened up new prospects in the treatment of many diseases caused by pathological organ changes, and in tissue bioengineering in the laboratory. The widespread introduction of IPS cells into clinical practice was preceded by years of research, primarily for their genetic stability.

The patient's condition is closely monitored by doctors, as well as specialists from the Independent Data Monitoring Committee. Three months after the operation, the committee ruled that the experiment should be continued and it is completely safe for patients.

Artificial stem cells are obtained by epigenetic programming from an adult by growing. Scientists in October 2022 already know how to grow cells of epithelium, muscles, blood. The first transplantation operations of such cells began in mid-2000, but have not yet become massive. Spinal cord injuries by implantation into the spine of induced stem cells are carried out for the first time in the world.[2]

A unique technology for fixing the spine has been created in Russia

In September 2022, it became known that a unique technology for fixing the spine was created in Russia. She significantly reduces rehabilitation.

A new method of stabilizing the spine in degenerative diseases, for example, osteochondrosis, intervertebral hernia or protrusion, was presented by doctors of the capital's spinal neurosurgical center of the city clinical hospital No. 67 named after L.A. Vorokhobov. Doctors were the first in Russia to propose a unique way to fix dynamic implants, which makes it possible to exclude their displacement and expand the range of use. It consists in forming a special bone bed for the implant and fixing it in it in an original way.

Moscow neurosurgeons were the first in Russia to present and successfully apply a new technique for stabilizing the spine in degenerative diseases. This is, for example, osteochondrosis, intervertebral hernia or protrusion. The period of rehabilitation of patients from three to four months has dropped to three to four weeks, "said Anastasia Rakova, Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Social Development.

The head of the spinal center, neurosurgeon Dmitriy Dzukaev, noted that the new technique was developed on the basis of an interdisciplinary training center for innovative surgical technologies in conditions as close as possible to real ones.

The development and implementation of this original technology for the treatment of degenerative diseases of the spine became possible thanks to the mayor's grant program and cooperation with the Moscow Center for Innovative Technologies in Healthcare. The technique has proven its effectiveness and today it is successfully used in practice at the Moscow Spinal Center, he added.
