On February 20, 2024 G.I. Turner National Medical Research Center for Pediatric Traumatology and Orthopedics Ministry of Health , the Russian Federation announced the development of the world's first device for operations on the spine children with. diastematomyelia The product for which the patent was obtained was called "Individual navigation guide for performing osteotomy of vertebral arches during the removal of diasthemomyelia."

Diasthematomyelia is a rare congenital malformation of the structures of the spinal column and spinal cord. As a result of this pathology, partial or complete splitting of the spinal cord by the longitudinal septum into two halves, each containing a central canal, occurs. Most often, diasthematomyelia manifests itself in the lumbar or thoracic regions. The disease is characterized by skin manifestations, neurological and orthopedic disorders, and is also accompanied by other defects in the neural tube.

World's first device developed for spinal surgery in children with diastematomyelia

The new Russian development is designed to increase the effectiveness of treatment of children with distematomyelia by performing osteotomy of vertebral arcs in the projection of the spinal canal bone septum with the most accurate boundaries of its spatial position using an individual navigation guide fixed to the dorsal bone structures of the vertebrae. Such a guide helps surgeons determine with high accuracy the area where incisions need to be made in the projection of the vertebrae to remove the bone septum.

The solution helps in separating the bone septum of the spinal canal from the arches of the vertebrae. At the same time, the trauma of surgery is reduced and the time for the operation is reduced. In addition, prevention of the development of deformations of the spinal column during the growth of the child is provided.[1]
