2023: Fine - 1 million rubles for LGBT content
On June 29, 2023, the Tverskoy District Court of the capital fined MegaFon 1 million rubles for the lack of age marking in a film demonstrating LGBT relations. The company was found guilty of committing an administrative offense under Part 2 of Article 6.21.2 of the Administrative Code of the Russian Federation ("Dissemination among minors of information demonstrating non-traditional sexual relations and (or) preferences or capable of causing minors to want to change gender").
According to TASS, the reason for this decision was that PJSC Megafon did not place the marking "18 +" on the films "Bridget Jones's Diary," "Greed" and "English Barber" broadcast by video services. The company applied "16 +" markings and films with LGBT scenes became available to minors. The company said it had already eliminated this flaw.
By the end of June 2023, most Russian online cinemas are embroiled in litigation about LGBT demonstrations. By this period, Roskomnadzor had drawn up protocols for 19 streaming out of 23 existing in Russia.
Part 2 of Article 6.21.2 of the Administrative Code provides for punishment in the form of a fine in the amount of 1 to 4 million rubles or suspension of activities for up to three months for legal entities.
The law on the complete prohibition of gay propaganda (6.21.2 Administrative Code) entered into force from the end of 2022. It prohibits the promotion of "non-traditional sexual relations" among all citizens, regardless of age. Such materials cannot be placed in the media, Internet, advertising, literature and cinema. In the second part of the article, Megafon and Start, as well as Movix, Peers.TV and Premier services, were previously fined.[1]
2022: Plan to merge with Start vidioservice
The company and the founders of START plan to merge the two online cinemas. Until 2022, MegaFon developed two video services for its subscribers. START (MegaFon owns 50% of the shares) provided a good offer of premieres of original series and films of its own production, while MegaFon TV played the role of a video marketplace with a large assortment: from TV channels to new films and TV series. MegaFon announced this on April 15, 2022. Read more here.
2016: MegaFon.TV has more than a million viewers
As of August 2016, MegaFon.TV is already watched by more than a million people throughout Russia, with the majority of subscribers - 72% - watching films, TV shows and TV channels from smartphones. In July, according to the operator, the three leaders on MegaFon.TV included the tapes "Hardcore," "Brothers from Grimsby" and "Gods of Egypt," displacing "Election Day-2," which held the leading positions in May and June.
MegaFon.TV first appeared on subscribers a few years ago. As of August 2016, when connecting to most package tariffs of the MegaFon - All Inclusive line and the Internet options, you can watch a number of films and TV channels for free.
2015: Launch of a modified version of MegaFon.TV
On November 30, 2015, MegaFon announced the launch of a modified version of the MegaFon.TV service. The changes affected the design, product functionality and business model.
According to the company, the modernized business model will help increase the popularity of legal content.
The business model is based on combining different conditions for providing the service: when films and packages of TV channels are already provided within the framework of tariff plans, as well as separately - when buying TV packages, new products. As of November 60, 2015, content is already provided within the framework of a number of tariffs of the All Inclusive line (for the promotion).
In May 2015, the service was put into trial operation in an updated form and, according to the press service, by November 30, 2015, more than a third of MegaFon.TV customers were those who took advantage of the offer (content included in the TP). It is characteristic that the service is available not only to subscribers MegaFon"," whereby the operator eliminated the barriers inherent in the telecom market for the use of branded services exclusively within the subscriber base.
MegaFon.TV - for the operator
- Video services are drivers of data transfer growth. The amount of PD traffic to subscribers watching video is twice the average.
- Video services are becoming a tool to increase the loyalty of their own customers and attract new subscribers:
- by providing high-speed access to video content
- by providing a high-quality product (on a mobile device, personal computer and Smart TV - wherever the client watches video content, not even on the operator's network).
