2021: Launch MetaHuman Creator - clouds to create realistic avatars of people
In mid-April 2021, Epic Games launched MetaHuman Creator, a free cloud tool for creating realistic avatars with animation of facial expressions and body movements. As part of the presentation of the new service, Epic published on YouTube a couple of videos demonstrating its capabilities.
MetaHuman Creator does not serve as a full-featured 3D modeling tool and changes the character's facial features only within certain parameters. However, the program includes 60 initial blogs, which allows you to create many unique characters in minutes, and then adapt them to the needs of the user. According to Epic, MetaHuman Creator, running on the Unreal Engine browser, can be used in conjunction with modern motion capture methods to create realistic scenes and character animations that can then be used in video games and films.
MetaHumans Creator was created by a pair of Epic-owned studios, 3Lateral and Cubic Motion, one of which is engaged in face animation. The MetaHumans Creator software includes three built-in animation sequences, so created avatars can not only smile and frown, but also realistically yawn and inflate cheeks.
Developers also note that 3D artists can export MetaHuman characters and edit them in Autodesk Maya or other applications, and then animate them manually or using motion capture technologies like FaceWare.
All characters created using MetaHuman Creator will be tied to the Epic Unreal license. This license is quite feasible for small projects: the Unreal developer kit can be used for free, and if the developer publishes a game created with its help, he does not pay Epic fees until he earns $1 million in revenue. After that, the fee is five percent.[1]
