2023: Product Announcement
On August 10, 2023, ZimVie announced the release of the Mobi-C cervical disc implant. This product does not require bone pruning or other fasteners such as screws.
The Mobi-C solution is for reconstruction the cervical spine. The operation can be performed on either one or two levels (C3-C7). The procedure is indicated in patients with a mature skeleton for reconstruction after a discectomy - a surgical intervention that involves partial or complete removal of the intervertebral disc. In most cases, it is complete removal that is performed, because with a partial one, a complication often occurs - a recurrence of an intervertebral hernia.
The Mobi-C implant is a movable prosthesis of cobalt, chromium and polyethylene alloy. The installation procedure is carried out in one stage. Prior to cervical disc implantation, patients must show no progress with conservative treatment for at least six weeks or show worsening symptoms despite ongoing therapy. Common postoperative risks of procedures associated with Mobi-C installation include neck, arm, back, shoulder, or head pain and dysphagia. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the use of a 4.5 mm high Mobi-C disc.
In our biomechanical study, we found that increasing the height of an artificial disc by only 1 mm reduces the range of motion by about 50%. Even a 5 mm high implant may be too tight for some patients. Thus, FDA approval of a 4.5 mm high Mobi-C disk is very good news for our patients and gives surgeons greater flexibility in choosing the most appropriate artificial product, "said Kee D. Kim, MD, professor and head of the Department of Spinal Neurosurgery at the University of California.[1] |
