2024: Presentation of a wound disinfection device

NRNU MEPhI has developed a therapeutic LED device designed to disinfect wounds. The university announced this on August 9, 2024.

source = NRNU MEPhI

Installation UFF-630/675-01-BIOSPYeK "was developed by employees of the Department of Laser Micro-Nano and Biotechnology of the Engineering and Physical Institute of Biomedicine NRNU MEPhI together with the Biospeck company.

The principle of operation of the device consists in controlled irradiation of an infected wound with red light (in the range of 665 nm) with a high power density and a wide grip - the irradiation area can be 20 by 20 centimeters. At the same time, the drug is used together with photosensitizers - a substance that increases the sensitivity of living tissues to light exposure, which is introduced into the irradiated wound before the session (the most commonly used drugs are from the group of chlorin derivatives Ye6 (Photoditazine, Photoran e6, Radachlorin).

As a result of the interaction of a photosensitizer located in a bacterial cell and radiation, various forms of active oxygen are formed, which destroy the pathogenic microflora. The bacterial cell does not have protection against such an action, resistance is not produced to such a mechanism, so the device can even destroy microorganisms resistant to antibiotics.

The device is equipped with a digital video monitoring module necessary to determine the duration of the irradiation session for each specific patient or each specific wound.

Light irradiation in this range contributes not only to wound disinfection, but also to tissue regeneration.

The device can be used for treating various wounds, both in the field and in the hospital, as well as for faster healing of postoperative sutures. Also possible use: in dermatology and cosmetology.

Compared to existing analogues, the plant has the largest radiation power density (about 10 times higher than the devices on the market), which contributes to a significant reduction in the duration of one session. In addition, the plant includes a module for fluorescent control of the content of a photoactive preparation in tissues.

According to representatives of NRNU MEPhI, potentially such an installation is necessary for all hospitals, burn centers, as well as surgical clinics

Clinical trials were conducted with the permission of the Local Ethics Committee of the FSAEI HE of the First Moscow State Medical University named after I.M. Sechenov of the Ministry of Health of Russia (Sechenov University).
