2020: The presentation of products of the WaveFabric Elements family for fiber-optical networks

On May 28, 2020 the Nokia company provided products of the WaveFabric Elements family for fiber-optical networks with channels capacity to 400 Gbps (400G) and above, necessary for satisfaction of the growing demand for high-performance services of networks of mobile communication of the 5th generation (5G) and cloud networks.

The provided components and subsystems will allow to upgrade and expand the existing optical transport networks, having increased capacity of optical links to 400 Gbps (400G) and above.

Coherent digital signal processors of fifth generation Photonic Service Engine optimized for full-scale (end-to-end) implementation of optical links with capacity 400G and above on fiber-optical transport networks are a part of family.

Photon silicon signal processors and subsystems will be used by NOKIA company and partner ecosystems for provision of services on fiber-optical transport networks of an operator class and ensuring interaction in the data processing centers (DPC) and between them on optical links with capacity 400G and above.

Technology achievements will be built in modules of vertically integrated optical transceivers (transceiving modules) which can be used for the most different, of the existing and again developed, network applications.

For the last ten years explosive increase in demand for capacity and performance of networks from video applications and mobile services was satisfied, mainly, due to continual improvement of technologies of photon level of network and production of the high-performance silicon digital signal processors (DSP). However as approaching a physical limit of capacity and processor performance operators should look for new scaling techniques of capacity and performance of elements of the networks and the systems of cloud computing for satisfaction to strict requirements of networks of mobile communication of the 5th generation (5G) without significant growth of expenses. The major condition for this purpose is transition to technology 400 of Gigabit Ethernet (400G). The technology 400G is positioned as the single network interface for IP networks, optical networks and the data processing centers (DPC). In case of success 400G will become the first general standard of speed for data transmission since the technology 100G implemented about ten years ago. In the forthcoming years 400G as the basic technology of high-speed electron-optical transport will have to transfer services 400G with the minimum costs for the most different network applications, each of which has the strict requirements to the range of communication, capacity and characteristics of connections and also to performance of nodes of network.

The WaveFabric Elements Nokia family includes technologies of digital signal processing (Digital Signal Processing, DSP) and the optical technologies developed for the new applications working at full-scale connections (end-to-end) with capacity 400G. These solutions will allow Nokia to optimize all electron-optical systems which are the cornerstone of modern networks and their future modifications. The high level of vertical integration of optical solutions of Nokia will allow to meet unique economic and technical requirements of data processing centers, city and regional networks, land and longhaul underwater networks.

The solutions of Nokia for fifth generation of the optical coherent digital signal processors (DSP) including the high-performance supercoherent PSE Vs Nokia processor and the economic compact PSE-Vc processor carry on tradition of development of the TsSP different models optimized for different optical network applications, design (form factor) and hardware platforms. Solutions TsSP are added now with a portfolio of the coherent optical products CSTAR which Nokia purchased together with Elenion Technologies company which is considered the pioneer in the field of optical silicon processor technologies. The family of plug-in modular transceiving circuits (transceivers) will allow Nokia company to expand the share in the crucial market of DPC, optical and IP networks and also in emerging markets which are in great need in inexpensive optical technologies for access networks of the fixed and mobile networks of communication.

Communication networks are at a critical stage of the development, and the technology 400G should become the catalyst of large-scale transformation of these networks. The solutions WaveFabric Elements will allow Nokia company to supply an optical ecosystem 400G with necessary components, subsystems and services and to continue development of the most high-performance transport solutions for networks 400G and the subsequent network technologies,

The family of optical solutions of CSTAR is already delivered to customers. Platforms and devices with PSE-V processors will become available in the 4th quarter 2020. The WaveFabric Elements Nokia family meets strict requirements of networks 400G for performance, characteristics and the cost level of transfer of one data bit. These solutions are intended for data processing centers, city and regional networks, reference networks (core) of mobile operator and also land and underwater backbone networks.

  • PSE Vs Gbod provides digital signal processing with a character speed up to 90 and it is based on the technology of probabilistic formation of levels of optical power of points of the star chart (canstelletion) developed in Bell Labs Nokia at data transmission on optical link with high spectral efficiency using formats of modulation of QAM of different orders (probabilistic constellation shaping, PCS). It is the only PCS technology of the second generation in the industry which passed test in field conditions. The combination of advanced algorithms of signal processing to enhanced capabilities of digital signal processors of the next generation allows when using this solution to support on optical links of transport networks of transmission rate up to 800 Gbps (800G) at simultaneous increase in range of communication by 60%, reduction of energy consumption by 40% and increase in spectral efficiency for 15% in comparison with TsSP of the previous generations.
  • PSE-Vc supports programmable data transmission with speeds from 100G to 400G and more on city and regional networks and also on backbone networks of big extent. Exclusively low power consumption allows to build in this solution the most different transceiving modules (transceivers).
  • In family of the optical solutions CSTAR Nokia the most modern optical silicon technologies and technologies of batching are used. They can be used for communication in data processing centers and between them, on city and regional networks and also on backbone networks of big extent.
  • The built-in coherent Nokia 400G transceivers are optimized for different platforms and applications, including a wide range of solutions of Nokia for optical transport, IP networks, the fixed access and mobile networks. Solutions 400G ZR/ZR + with QSFP-DD form factor and also more productive and multifunction option 400G with CFP2-DCO form factor are a part of this family.
