2021: Create Profile M Standard

On July 22, 2021, it became known that the company ONVIF developed the Profile M. standard. It is designed for the market, cloudy video analysts and also expands the ability to use metadata and process information in other security systems, such as access control cloud services , and platforms. Internet of Things

Profile M provides a standard way to exchange metadata and events between services with analytical capabilities and devices, such as IP surveillance cameras, video stream management software, and server or cloud services. This profile allows integrators and end users to flexibly combine solutions from different peripheral device or service providers that create metadata and events with video surveillance software or cloud services and applications IoT in the same security system.

ONVIF is aware that the need for interoperability has gone beyond the traditional relationship between the hardware device and the software client from different vendors. The flexibility of connecting cloud and server services as "compatible devices" makes Profile M interesting also for independent developers of software analytical solutions. This will help stimulate the growth of the number and types of security applications, "said Shriram Bhetanabottla, chairman of the Profile M working group.

So, for video surveillance systems, Profile M can be used to highlight specific objects in the video stream, start automatic responses, as well as to store and search for video content of interest. Profile M also supports event processing interfaces for object counting and facial/car number analysis, as well as JSON events via MQTT, a protocol for IoT applications.

An example of the use of the IoT may be a room temperature control where the Profile M CCTV detects people in the room and sends an ONVIF event via the MQTT to a platform or application which in turn triggers the room temperature control device.

Profile M can be combined with other ONVIF video surveillance and access control profiles for an integrated security system based on ONVIF[1] interfaces[2].
