2023: Algorithm Development
In early June 2023, the Perm National Research Polytechnic University announced the creation of an algorithm that can be used in applications to improve the accuracy of determining the geographical location of buses and other types of public transport.
In applications, the accuracy of locating buses and taxis in real time is affected by the quality of the equipment signal, the load on the network, and the distance between sender and receiver. If these factors in users in Russia lead to the display of outdated data, then buses approaching the stop will appear on an interactive map at the time when the vehicle has already passed the stop. Similar services include algorithms to offset data delays, but this prediction method may not work if there are traffic jams on the way or vehicles leave their route. The developers from the Perm National Research Polytechnic University (PNIPU) in this project improved the prediction algorithm, this was done by taking into account the last two location points instead of one.
PNIPU students created a game to evaluate the effectiveness of this approach. In this game, two clients received the coordinates of their characters, with a time interval of three times per sec.Tests of the algorithm showed a 36% increase in location accuracy compared to traditional methods of predicting character movements.
The algorithm can be used in GPS navigators, online maps that display vehicles. The product can be implemented in multiplayer online games such as Dota 2, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and Overwatch 2, said one of the authors of the project Matvey Bogdanov, a student of the Department of Information Technologies and Automated Systems at PNIPU.[1]
