2025: Introduction of a cardioverter defibrillator

Palekh Engineering has developed a Russian implantable cardioverter defibrillator. 292.5 million rubles were invested in the development. The cardioverter defibrillator has already passed the first tests on animals and, after a number of technical improvements, can be put into mass production. The company announced this on March 20, 2025.

Every year, 200-250 thousand cases of sudden cardiac death are registered in our country (prevalence rate - 123.3 per 100 thousand population per year). Its main cause is fatal ventricular fibrillation. The only clinically proven method of preventing fatal ventricular arrhythmia is the installation of an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD), "said Maxim Belinka, CEO of Paleh Engineering.

The development of ICD was carried out for 2.5 years.

Leading specialists of the largest clinics in Russia - the Federal Scientific and Clinical Center of the FMBA of Russia and the Moscow Regional Scientific and Clinical Institute named after M.F. Vladimirsky.

For so many patients, ICD is a vital device. In the BRICS countries alone, about 6 million patients need its installation annually. As of March 2025, the potential need for ICDs in Russia is 5 times higher than the number of implants performed. In many ways, this situation has developed due to the limited availability of this type of medical care, "said Sergei Korolev, one of the developers, head of the department for surgical treatment of heart rhythm disorders at the FNCC FMBA of Russia.

The technological difference between our defibrillator and foreign counterparts is software algorithmistics. She has shown effectiveness in the studies, and we bring her to perfection. So, one of the promising, in our opinion, solutions will be the use of artificial intelligence as the second, duplicating system of discrimination against life-threatening arrhythmias and other software algorithms of the device. AI will give recommendations to the doctor on changing certain parameters of ICD during a planned check of the device. We also plan to optimize the dimensions and increase the battery capacity - the device will work smoothly for at least 10 years, - Alexander Chistov, chief engineer of the project, shared his plans for the future.

These costs, even under a conservative scenario, are planned to be quickly covered: it is planned to achieve the target value of sales - 15 thousand devices in Russia and the BRICS countries - by 2036. In addition, it is planned to produce two more devices that are technological byproducts of the defibrillator and will compensate for part of the costs even before the ICD enters the market, - said Maxim Belinka.
