2020: Use for deliveries of the spare parts BMW
At the beginning of April, 2020 announced BMW that uses a blockchain for tracking of international supplies of spare parts. The German car maker submitted the PartChain project developed in the company for the first time started in 2019. To this platform it is going to transfer all suppliers of BMW.
Supply chains of carmakers are very difficult and include a number of different suppliers who need to hold communication with the producer constantly. Using PartChain, BMW traces a way of all parts from production to the plant. Having invited all suppliers to the general blockchain platform, the company will gain clearer idea of a supply chain and will be able to book audit more effectively.
PartChain is protected from unauthorized access and allows to transfer data in our supply chain controlled — Andreas Wendt, the board member of BMW who is responsible for network of purchases and suppliers explained. — This step is designed to bring digitalization of purchases in BMW Group to new level. We want to create the open platform which will allow to exchange data in supply chains. |
Said BMW that already carried out pilot tests of the platform in 2019 in cooperation with the German company Automotive Lighting which delivers to carmaker of a headlight. "This year we want to expand the project and to include in it other suppliers" — Wendt explained. In the long term of BMW hopes to trace not only spare parts, but also critically significant raw materials from the mine to steel works.
PartChain uses cloud services from Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure in addition to a blockchain which is called Hyperledger Fabric. However, BMW not to get used to a blockchain, the carmaker already started several similar projects. Naprmer, BMW is one of founders of consortium Mobility Open Blockchain Initiative (MOBI) and works with other partners over the standard of identification of a chain of vehicles (VID).[1]
