Testing of C-V2X with car makers in China
Qualcomm tested C-V2X with car makers in China. It became known on November 15, 2020.
Cooperation with the different Chinese companies with the purpose to show the finished ecosystem based on technology of data exchange between vehicles, elements of road infrastructure and other participants of the movement C-V2X (cellular vehicle-to-everything) will help to accelerate large-scale commercialization and industry developments.
In 2020 when testing capacity the main attention was paid to suitability of products and the C-V2X systems to operation at large-scale deployment. Assessment was made taking into account earlier reached indicators of mutual compatibility and security. Thus, the industry took serious steps to large-scale commercialization of C-V2X technology. For emulation of a difficult road situation, including city traffic in rush hours and traffic jams, were involved 180 onboard (OBU) and roadside (RSU) blocks. Testing of communication indicators of C-V2X and functionality of applications for the chip modules, terminals and cars in different scenarios confirmed suitability of the C-V2X systems for large-scale operation.
In the majority of the tested cars and onboard blocks it was applied by the C-V2X-chip Qualcomm 9150. Stable communication was provided Qualcomm Snapdragon by the Automotive platform 4G. Keeping in direct link of cars with each other (V2V), cars with infrastructure (V2I) of communications and also communication with 4G network or 5G, the Snapdragon Automotive 4G/5G platforms with the built-in C-V2X technology and means of positioning of high resolution increase security and efficiency of traffic, reduce jams and increase capacity of a road network and also promote large-scale commercialization of C-V2X technology.
Five V2I-scenarios of communication with infrastructure included: use of intra saloon information displays, information transfer about signals of the traffic light and the help when choosing optimal speed for journey on green light, demonstration of the mechanism of security, warning of possible collision with vulnerable participants of traffic and a reminder on approach to section with a roadwork. Five V2V-test scripts of direct link of cars were with each other executed by means of peripheral calculations of a multiservice access (Multi-Access Edge Computing, MEC) using functionality of positioning and cards of high resolution and included: warning of possible collision, release of the road for special transport, warning of aberrant behavior of the car on the road, the help at turn on the left and warning of obstacles out of a visibility range, warning of traffic jams.
In China the technology 5G strengthens automotive industry, expands the nomenclature of applications and promotes scaling of C-V2X-industries. Meanwhile the reliable base of the infocommunication industry in China also promotes commercialization and implementation of C-V2X — Jim Misener, the senior director of company Qualcomm Technologies, Inc told. on product management and the leader of a global ecosystem of V2X. — In cooperation with many representatives of the Chinese automotive industry we accelerate commercial implementation of C-V2X - projects based on our portfolio and we bring closer an era of the intellectual connected cars, safe and effective traffic[1]. |
The announcement of the platform for onboard and roadside blocks
On January 10, 2020 the company Qualcomm Technologies submitted the reference C-V2X Qualcomm platform for onboard and roadside blocks (roadside unit, RSU). The C-V2X Qualcomm platform supplements communication C-V2X-solutions, offering necessary computing power for implementation of a full range of solutions of wireless communication 4G, 5G and C-V2X, such as multifrequency services GNSS for exact position fix, providing information security, signing and verification of messages of V2X, and stacks of V2X-applications of an intelligent transport system (Intelligent Transport System, ITS). The C-V2X Qualcomm platform is based on architecture of low power of Qualcomm Technologies, its optimization for use with software applications is directed to acceleration of deployment onboard to C-V2X - systems and roadside blocks in USA and other countries.
Using the reference C-V2X Qualcomm platform, we propose solutions for C-V2X-communications, wireless communication 4G and 5G with data processing with Qualcomm Aerolink integration (Qualcomm Technologies technology for information security support with support of signing of messages and program stacks). Nakul Duggal, the senior vice president of Qualcomm Technologies Inc told. on product management |
Characteristics and possibilities of the C-V2X platform:
- The Qualcomm Snapdragon 2150 platform, the applied Qualcomm Technologies processor are developed for onboard and roadside blocks of "smart" transport infrastructure.
- Deeply integrated V2X-solution including the applied processor, a stack of ITS, Aerolink Security technology, signing of messages, verification up to 2500 messages per second, the PC5/Uu modem, connection of Wi-fi 6 and BT 5.1, MF-GNSS, support of controllers to network (controller area network, CAN).
- Pure architecture (clean architecture) with the modular, scalable and modern circuit.
- Support of safe isolation of domains between C-V2X and telematic stacks and applications.
- Support of functionality of V2X, including stacks of ITS, the solution of security Aerolink V2X with the integrated verification and signing of messages.
- The optimized communication with the Qualcomm Snapdragon Automotive 4G and 5G platforms with the integrated C-V2X technology, including simultaneous communication on WWAN Uu networks and direct transmission on C-V2X PC5 channel.
- Drivers of the modem interface and developer kits of software for telematics and C-V2X accelerate integration and application development and services.
- Support of drivers for Linux BSP.
- Support of drivers for hardware securities of third-party producers.
According to the company, for January, 2020 the C-V2X technology is globally compatible to a 5G and supplements other sensors of a system of assistance to the driver (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems, ADAS) such as video cameras, radars and lidars (Light Detection and Radar, LIDAR). The mode of direct link of C-V2X with a low delay is intended for a direct connection of cars with each other, road infrastructure and pedestrians without use of a cellular network in the selected and harmonized ITS range of 5.9 GHz.
If to speak about perspective of onboard and infrastructure solutions, then the Snapdragon 4G and 5G platforms at the same time keep in close contact C-V2X and telecommunication: Snapdragon 4G supports technology LTE, Snapdragon 5G — technology 5G in sub-6 GHz range. In one reference solution Qualcomm Technologies it is provided in combination with the Snapdragon 2150 platform the full range of communications of C-V2X, LTE and a 5G, including short distance communication, necessary computing power for verification of certificates and the V2X application is supported.
Field tests using the solutions Qualcomm Technologies showed essential advantages of direct link of C-V2X in terms of range, reliability and performance in comparison with standard 802.11p. The C-V2X technology showed more than double superiority on range and that the most important, big reliability. Besides, taking into account development of C-V2X in direction 5G New Radio, this technology offers wider and differentiated opportunities.
