2020: Qualcomm 212 LTE IoT Modem

On April 21, 2020 the Qualcomm Technologies company provided a product for stimulation of cellular communication for IoT-devices (cellular IoT): the modem of Qualcomm 212 LTE IoT Modem, an energy efficient chipset of category NB2 with support only NB-IoT.

Qualcomm 212 LTE IoT Modem

According to the company, energy efficiency — for April, 2020 the main problem of IoT-devices which should work for years independently. The energy efficient architecture of a chipset provides low average energy consumption. In sleep mode of Qualcomm of 212 LTE IoT Modem consumes less than one microampere. For expansion of the nomenclature of the used batteries and increase in term of independent operation in the modem the extra-low voltage of a cut-off is implemented at the system level and adaptation of energy consumption to different voltage levels of power sources is provided. Thanks to it the supply voltage of end devices can not exceed 2.2 V.

Qualcomm of 212 LTE IoT Modem supports single-mode IoT-connection of category NB2 according to specification 3GPP release 14 (3GPP Release 14 Cat. NB2 IoT). It provides an expanded covering for applications, steady against delays, uses ranges from 700 MHz to 2.1 GHz for the international roaming. On a compact crystal are placed: modem processing unit of a primary signal, the processor of applications, memory, the RF transceiver with completely integrated input RF cascade and power management units. Based on this modem it is possible to create LTE modules less than 100 mm. quarter. Existence in the modem of Qualcomm 212 LTE IoT Modem of the integrated ARM Cortex M3 processor and a native set of network IoT-data transfer protocols allows to implement embedded applications. Together with the Qualcomm Technologies modem also released a complex of development tools (SDK) which will help to create specialized software for the applied processor, also the company offers the built-in support of such cloud platforms as Microsoft Azure IoT SDK.

The single-mode modem of Qualcomm 212 LTE IoT Modem with support of the international roaming became in one row with the multimode modem of Qualcomm 9205 which supports the Cat.NB2, Cat.M1 and GPRS standards and also GNSS. Commercial availability of Qualcomm of 212 LTE IoT Modem is planned for the second half of 2020.

2019: Integration of the LTE modem of Qualcomm 9205 with nuSIM

On October 30, 2019 it became known that Qualcomm Technologies integrated the solution nuSIM of Deutsche Telekom company in the LTE modem of Qualcomm 9205. It will allow producers of devices to port the applications compatible to nuSIM, on devices with the LTE modem of Qualcomm 9205. The nuSIM technology offers absolutely a different approach to creation of the integrated SIM cards and was developed especially for use in the field of Internet of Things (IoT) for which simplicity of the solution, profitability and low power consumption have paramount value.

Qualcomm 9205

Using this technology support of the SIM cards functions can be integrated directly into modem chips. Thereby the costs for logistics and storage connected with normal SIM cards are eliminated, at the same time thanks to economy of the place on the printed circuit board and to reduction of dimensions of IoT devices developers have absolutely other opportunities. Besides, the technology provides own process of initialization which allows to save the optimized profiles of operators less than 500 bytes in size and to load them on the ready device at any moment of its lifecycle.

For work of nuSIM and also some other safety features of the LTE modem of Qualcomm of 9205 LTE, the solution Qualcomm Trusted Execution Environment (TEE) which cornerstone the ARM TrustZone technology — the isolated and safe environment for processing of the program functions connected with the entrusted applications is is used. The LTE modem of Qualcomm 9205 — a universal multimode chipset of the last generation which was specially developed for support of a reliable and fast communication in IoT devices, for example, in sensors for accounting of tangible assets, medical devices, security systems, sensors of the "smart" cities and "smart" counters and also in a number of wearable devices. Thanks to the characteristics Qualcomm of 9205 LTE is ideal for IoT devices with a battery supply which should work in field conditions within several years, and solutions of Internet of Things of a small form factor with permanent connection to network. Therefore use of nuSIM technology became a logical step which will help to increase demand of the LTE modem of Qualcomm 9205 in this sphere.

the Industrial sector is in a stage of digital transformation, and we cooperate with many companies of industrial Internet of Things. We are proud of the fact that we work with Deutsche Telekom, creators of nuSIM technology, from the very beginning of its development. This technology will allow producers of devices of Internet of Things to propose to end customers solutions with support of cellular communication "from a box". Such innovations will help them to develop IoT-devices of the last generation,

2018: Qualcomm 9205

On December 17, 2018 the company Qualcomm provided LTE-modem the next generation of Qualcomm 9205, specially held for use in devices Internet of Things, including applications for accounting/tracking of assets, monitoring health and systems security, sensors "smart" city and smart meters and also wearable devices. According to the company, the modem integrates the key technologies necessary for creation of products and services in the field of Internet of Things, in one chipset. Among them — support of LTE Category M1 modes (eMTC) and NB2 (NB-IoT) and also 2G/E-GPRS, processing of applications, a geolocation, security at the hardware level, support cloud of services and the accompanying tools for developers.

Qualcomm 9205

In comparison with the previous generation in this modem energy consumption in standby mode for December, 2018 decreased by 70% that is crucial for devices of Internet of Things which are powered from batteries and should work in field conditions at an extent of not less than 10 years. Also the LTE modem of Qualcomm 9205 is 50% more compact and cheaper in production, than his predecessor that does it ideal for application in small-size IoT-devices with support of LPWAN. The modem is compatible to software for the previous generation of solutions of Qualcomm of LTE IoT that will allow producers of modules not to make investments repeatedly in the software when developing the next products.
