2021: Wi-Fi 2.0 Platform Launch

Rostelecom on February 24, 2021 announced the start of pilot operation of a single federal Wi-Fi 2.0 platform. This is a multivendor solution that combines the server part, authorization portal, personal offices of the user and network administrator. The platform is designed to create managed secure networks for wireless communication of customer data.

On the basis of the platform, Rostelecom developed the Light Wi-Fi product. This is a service that allows customers to organize two independent Wi-Fi networks: public and closed for employees to work with corporate devices and network storage. To connect the service, you do not need to configure individual access points: an existing customer Wi-Fi router is sufficient.

The platform will help develop a single federal Wi-Fi solution and abandon disparate local services in the future. The software and hardware complex will allow synchronous launch of products in all regions of the country, will ensure the introduction of uniform technological standards. The own platform will reduce dependence on third-party vendors, which means it will expand the customer's capabilities when choosing equipment, "said Dmitry Kim, vice president of Rostelecom, director of the macro-regional branch of the Center.

The Light Wi-Fi service for February 2021 is used on more than a thousand routers in the Central Federal District. The Rostelecom solution allows customers to quickly create wireless networks both for managing production processes and for organizing guest access. The service helps save on the purchase of additional equipment, which is especially relevant for small businesses. Customers get a full Wi-Fi solution with user identification to provide access to the Internet. Isolating the public wireless network from enterprise Wi-Fi guarantees the security of corporate customer service devices. Visitors do not see a local network for employees, so all corporate data is reliably protected, "said Denis Ryabchenkov, director of product management for the corporate and state segment of Rostelecom.

We have deployed Wi-Fi networks on an already connected router from Rostelecom. A convenient personal account allows you to independently manage the service, determine the schedule of networks, view statistics on our guests and analyze their activity. With the help of a simple designer of start pages, they set up a user authorization window in accordance with the corporate style, "said Oksana Bondar, founder of the Center for Podology and Aesthetics in Nizhnevartovsk.

To connect to a private corporate Wi-Fi network, customer employees use a password. Visitors get access to a public wireless network using SMS, a call to the toll-free number 8-800 or the credentials of the public services portal. In most cases, service startup and equipment setup are carried out remotely.

The Wi-Fi 2.0 platform also includes advertising services designed to conduct marketing activities and promote services on the customer's network. Customers can create and conduct surveys, receive statistics on connections and banner views. Advertising services serve as an additional tool for monetizing customer Wi-Fi traffic.

As of February 2021, the Wi-Fi 2.0 platform serves about 1,050 customer access points. By the end of 2021, Rostelecom plans to increase the number of connected routers to 3,500. The provider is working on expanding the functionality of the platform: it will be possible to provide an authorization service on the channel of any operator, while traffic will pass through the customer's networks.

Rostelecom uses its own backbone data network, cloud infrastructure, and comprehensive IT solutions to implement projects.
