Nuclear icebreaker project Russia

The nuclear icebreaker Rossiya of project 105010, which is being built at the Zvezda shipyard in the Primorsky Territory, will become the most powerful icebreaker in the world. The vessel will be equipped with two reactor plants RITM-400 a total capacity of 120 MW, which will allow it to overcome ice up to 4 meters thick and lay a channel about 50 meters wide.

First Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov said earlier that the completion of the construction of the Rossiya icebreaker is scheduled for 2030. As of the end of 2023, the technical readiness of the vessel was 11%.

The state customer for the construction is the state corporation Rosatom, and the developer is FSUE Atomflot. The only contractor of the contract is Zvezda Shipbuilding Complex LLC.

The icebreaker "Russia" will have a length of 210 meters, a width of 47 meters and a draft of 13 meters. Its reactor plants RITM-400 1.8 times more powerful than the RITM-200 reactors used on Project 22220 universal nuclear icebreakers.

The main task of the new icebreaker will be to ensure year-round drilling of large-tonnage vessels throughout the entire water area of the Northern Sea Route. Initially, it was planned to build at least three such icebreakers, but according to the decree of the President of the Russian Federation on amendments to the Strategy for the Development of the Arctic Zone of the Russian Federation until 2035, now it is planned to build only one icebreaker leader.[1]
