Sberbank installed 10,000 servers of its own design and completely abandoned IBM DataPower and Oracle Exadata
Sberbank delivered 10 thousand servers of its own design. The bank announced this in its annual report, published in June 2025. These servers are adapted to work with natural cooling in the data center and are included in the unified register of electronic products of the Ministry of Industry and Trade.
Sberbank installed and commissioned servers of its own design, which will become the basis of hardware in the bank, the annual report for 2024 says.
The fact that Sberbank has started creating its own servers for internal needs became known in 2024. Then it was a question of the fact that the design computing equipment of Sberbank is produced on the basis of Intel and AMD processors with x86 architecture. However, until now, the bank has not reported on the scale of shipments of this equipment.
From the vacancies published over the past year, it follows that a rather extensive team for the development of computer systems of their own design for various purposes has been formed in Sberbank: "Our team is creating new hardware products for the infrastructure of the Sberbank group. We design, develop and implement our own server solutions for virtualization and containerization, data storage, training and execution of AI models. We are responsible for the entire process from the idea to the commissioning of the equipment. We investigate and implement modern technologies at HW, work with design centers and industries, test and validate new equipment, and provide support to our customers inside the Bank. We manage products at all stages of the life cycle[1]
In its annual report, the bank claims that it has already completely completed the rejection of foreign equipment, which included RISC servers, IBM DataPower and Oracle Exadata.
Earlier, the bank reported that they use tens of thousands of servers. Given the volume of supply of equipment of its own design, the bank probably continues to use server computing products of Russian and Asian vendors in some volume. TAdviser is awaiting clarification on this issue from Sberbank.
The annual report also indicates progress in the field of import substitution of software. So, for example, already 90% of all DBMS in the bank - produced by Sberbank. We are talking about products such as Platform V Pangolin, DataGrid SPD and Hadoop Greenplum. And the number of servers on Platform V SberLinux's own server operating system has exceeded the number of servers on Red Hat Enterprise Linux.
In addition, 78% of Servers OS already account for SberLinux OS Server, an OS developed by Sberbank. It is now the most common operating system in the bank.
One of the largest projects completed in the reporting period is the transition to its own import-substituted processing platform. It transferred 100% of the transaction load, more than 200 million cards. The platform contains 60 unique microservices and uses 17,000 cores, excluding georeservice.
Its own solution allows you to completely eliminate dependence on foreign software, reduces the cost of issuing and maintaining bank cards, ensures high speed and reliability of transactions on Sberbank cards, the bank states in its annual report.
During 2024, Sberbank continued to implement import substitution programs in the field of cybersecurity. According to Sberbank, it has significantly increased the technological maturity of most replaced systems that ensure infrastructure security. It is noteworthy that, as in other segments of IT solutions, Sberbank here develops its own products, which it switches from vendor solutions. For example, in the reporting period, the bank replaced the solution for monitoring and analyzing network security (Tufin) with a product of its own development Network Security Manager, and also transferred the functionality of the Flow Arbor analyzer to the solution of its own development Network Detection and Response.
Sberbank also fully switched to use in the security gateways of the domestic product Platform V Sowa. The solution provides more than 300 automated systems of Sberbank and more than 500 projects of the group. In total, over 12 thousand Platform V Sowa installations have been deployed, the total cost of ownership of which is up to 28 times lower in comparison with foreign hardware and software complexes.
The number of servers in all data centers of Sberbank has reached 63 thousand units
As of September 2024, the number of servers in all data centers (data centers) of Sberbank exceeded 63 thousand units. The organization is the owner of the largest fleet of computing power and the largest consumer of microelectronics in Russia. This was announced on September 23, 2024 by the head of Sberbank German Gref Gref[2]
We have more than 63 thousand servers for various purposes in our four data centers. Today we are the largest consumer of microelectronics and specialists related to this, "Gref notes.
According to him, there is a shortage of specialists in the field of microelectronics in the world. According to experts, until 2030, the shortage of such employees on a global scale will be up to 1 million people. According to Sberbank's estimates, the deficit in Russia will be at the level of 50 thousand people, even if the planned growth is taken into account when training specialists in universities. Gref said that Sber cooperates with the departments of various Russian universities, selecting and helping to train talented specialists.
The head of Sberbank also announced the need for state support for microelectronics. This is one of the most difficult and competitive industries, and its development requires significant financial investments. With a high key rate, the role of existing state programs for financing industry enterprises increases. He stressed the importance of maintaining preferential tax regimes and expanding subsidy programs. As an example, German Gref cited foreign experience, where states invest a lot in the development of the industry[3].

2015: Target Data Center Architecture until 2020
The concept of Sberbank provides that in 2019-2020. it should have a total of three own data centers, said Nikita Volkov, senior vice president of IT at the bank, answering TAdviser questions during a press briefing in December 2015.
According to Volkov, Sberbank currently has a significantly larger number of data centers located in different regions of the country. They were built according to the old concept of Sberbank, which involved the creation of data centers with each of its 16 territorial banks. Banking systems were installed locally at these sites.
In 2011, Sberbank launched the Centralization 2.0 program to transfer all its territorial banks to a single IT platform. For its implementation in Moscow, a new large data center was created - MegaData Center "South Port," where all critical systems of Sberbank are now based.
Volkov says that some of the local non-critical systems for servicing operations in territorial data centers still remain. Sberbank plans to centralize these systems as well and leave some of the data centers that will be used only for telecommunications tasks.
The task of Sberbank for the near future is to build a second megaData Center in Skolkovo, says Nikita Volkov. Earlier, TAdviser wrote that in December the bank began searching for a general contractor to create it. Sberbank is ready to pay about 13 billion rubles for work on the project.
After that, Sberbank plans to build a third major strategic data center. Volkov told TAdviser that it will be located at a distance of more than 1,000 km from Moscow, presumably in the Urals. According to him, preliminary work on this project has already begun. This data center will act as a backup site.
While Sberbank does not have its own reserve data centers, it leases three reserve data centers in Moscow. Nikita Volkov explains the need to lease three data centers at once by the fact that Sberbank did not find a single backup data center for the level of the Yuzhny Port megaData Center.
