Sybase Replication Server (RS) is the Replication server of data between a DB of different producers.

In August, 2010 the Sybase Company announced the new version of the product Replication Server 15.5 allowing to carry out replication of corporate databases. In the new version developers from Sybase implemented a number of additional functions and technologies which minimize delays at data movement between corporate storages.

The patent High Volume Adaptive Replication (HVAR) technology will allow to reduce costs of time for replication of large volumes of data due to careful and fast data analysis, subject to change, and deliveries in a point of purpose only of the end result. Such approach guarantees the increased performance of transactions in comparison with traditional techniques of continuous replication.

The new version of Sybase Replication Server will allow to estimate advantages of Real-Time Loading Edition technology which will provide faster delivery of transaction data from the Sybase Adaptive Server Enterprise (ASE) servers on the analytical Sybase IQ server.

The increased performance of Replication Server 15.5 in the heterogeneous environments including the Sybase ASE, Oracle, IBM DB2 and Microsoft SQL Server servers is guaranteed to the client organizations. Corporate specialists will be able to support the applications interacting with Oracle databases in operating state ("warm standby" mode) in case of system failure.

Features of a product

Sybase Replication Server goes beyond distributed databases and provides the first solution for creation of these distributed systems - flexible architecture for creation of the systems meeting the real requirements of business. Earlier architecture of the distributed DB use the protocol of two-phase completion of transactions (2PC) which is too expensive to daily use and can lead to a stop of all system because of failure of one of a component. In other approaches the simplified mechanism of "instant pictures" of tables (snapshots) which does not use transaction is used and therefore does not provide transaction integrity of copies of data. Proposing real solutions for real problems, Replication Server is the leader of the industry among products for replication.

Replication Server synchronizes the replicable copies of data which are on heterogeneous platforms in network the client-server. It provides the highest performance at online transaction processing (On-Line Transactions Processing - OLTP), eliminating a basic contradiction between performance of the OLTP applications and decision making support systems (Decision Support Systems - DSS). It also provides high degree of local autonomy and flexibility. Remote places can update replicable data, using the safe mechanism of remote update. Transforming information on the fly, Replication Server synchronizes databases with different structures, formats of data and names of fields and tables. The flexible replicaiton engine of events provides the notification of remote places about events, allowing each remote place to react to events according to local requirements.

Replication Server supports failsafe system operation - architecture of applications which allows users to continue work even in cases of lack of communication with separate parts of distributed system. After Replication Server communication recovery automatically synchronizes databases.

Replication Server is a key component in development of the distributed systems, effective at cost, meeting the most important requirements of business. It solves some of the major problems of the clients not solvable using normal architecture of the distributed DB:

  • corporate consolidation: Replication Server allows to construct uniform corporate representation of the distributed transactions, the closest to real time, even in cases when parts of distributed system use different hardware platforms and DBMS
  • decentralization: Replication Server allows you to place data in those places where these data are necessary. It reduces dependence on failures of the central processing computer and data networks and cuts down the total costs of information exchange. It also supports bidirectional sharing of data with use of a safe method of updating of remote data
  • high availability: systems using Replication Server remain reliable and steady, despite failures of the equipment, the software and networks. Such systems provide very high response time at reasonable costs
  • support of decision making systems: Replication Server can replicate data of OLTP, allowing your analysts to use data almost in real time (with lag in several seconds). At the same time tasks of DSS will not have any impact on performance of accomplishment of tasks of OLTP
  • disaster recovery: Replication Server allows to support "a warm reserve" of the database (warm standby). In case of accident the main DB applications can quickly switch to the backup copy.

Technical specification

Supported platforms - Replication Server works at all most widespread platforms. Replication Server can work with the data stored in Sybase RDBMS on any supported platform. It also works with data of other sources in any form to which it is possible to provide access using Replication Agents, Replication Driver for ODBC and using a series of products of interaction Enterprise CONNECT.

  • System requirements - the number of the servers supported by one Replication Server is limited to machine opportunities, volume of transactions and opportunities of network<
  • the smallest extent of queue of transactions is 20 Mb and is limited only to the size of disk space
  • the size of the executable file Replication Server - 6 MB
  • the Sybase SQL Server Replication Agent size - 3 Mb

Means of interface between Sybase Replication Server and Sybase Aleri Streaming Platform

The adapter provides data collection and processing about transactions with the data stored in diverse bases on technology of processing of difficult events (CEP) in real time that will promote effective solution of such tasks, relevant for financial institutions, as management of the normative reference information and aggregation of data on risks. The companies applying Sybase Aleri Streaming Platform, a front line in the market the high-speed platform of processing of difficult events using the specified means can integrate the corporate databases for the purpose of conversion of transactions to information business events which can be integrated and analyzed in real time. It emphasizes orientation of Sybase to satisfaction of needs of customers and its innovative positions in the field of the control software with risks and automation of trading for the financial industry once again.

Participants of financial markets already apply Sybase Replication Server and Aleri CEP to the analysis of transactions and risk exposure in real time in relation to different asset types. In many cases data on transactions and positions are fragmented — they are stored in the different relational bases located in different territorial subdivisions and in different regions. Having integrated Sybase Replication Server with the Aleri CEP mechanism, users can eliminate a fragmentirovannost, consolidating data from diverse bases in real time. The fact that in this case intervention neither in construction of the existing systems, nor in schemes of their work is not required is of special interest.

The new Sybase adapter for financial companies can be used at the solution of the following tasks:

  • calculation of the aggregated risk — obtaining information on transactions from a set of databases in real time and their correlation analysis using the CEP mechanism for risk identification and degree of risk exposure in cuts of the client, the region and also during the set time frame;
  • dynamic monitoring of a portfolio — when the user adds the new tool or the new partner to the portfolio, the CEP mechanism taking into account these data begins to calculate and update dynamically the market value of a portfolio, using the market data coming to a system;
  • control of execution of transactions — capture of data on transactions from base in process of their registration for control of profits and losses in real time and generation of notifications in case of accomplishment of some conditions or achievement of the set threshold values (for example, transactions on a certain amount or on specific stocks).

Possible ways to use the adapter in other areas the following:

  • control of exceeding of threshold values of order amounts — continuous control of order amounts on goods and generation of notifications in case of detection of orders for the amount of more certain, with initiation of necessary subsequent checks;
  • control of stocks in a warehouse — continuous control of hourly sales volume with taking measures in case of risk of exhaustion of a warehouse to these or those positions;
  • control of work of contact center — continuous control of average time of permission of addresses that allows to reveal potential problems and beforehand to prevent them.
