2024: Server Hacking

At the end of June 2024, TeamViewer, which produces widely used remote access tools, confirmed information about server hacking. Russian hackers known as APT29 and Midnight Blizzard are allegedly behind the cyber attack.

The company said the hackers initially attacked the servers on June 26, taking advantage of an employee's "credentials in a corporate IT environment." TeamViewer said the cyber attack was limited to the corporate network and that the company divides its internal network and customer systems. The company added that it had "no evidence that an attacker gained access to our IT product environment or customer data." How exactly hackers took possession of the credentials of a TeamViewer employee is unknown. A TeamViewer representative also declined to answer whether the company maintains technical logs to determine the movement of data across the network.

TeamViewer is one of the most popular providers of remote access tools, allowing its corporate customers, including shipping giant DHL and beverage maker Coca-Cola, to access other electronic devices over the Internet. The company has more than 600,000 customers (by June 2024) and provides remote access to more than 2.5 billion devices worldwide. It is assumed that hackers want to use TeamViewer to remotely install malware on victims' devices.

It is known that at the beginning of 2024, the same group of hackers hacked into the Microsoft corporate network and stole the electronic correspondence of top managers. Microsoft said other tech companies were compromised in the cyber attack. The US cybersecurity agency CISA confirmed that hackers were able to steal even federal government emails posted on Microsoft's cloud services.[1]

2020: Fixing a vulnerability that allows you to remotely steal your system password

Users of the TeamViewer Remote PC Management Tool are strongly encouraged to upgrade to the latest version of TeamViewer due to a dangerous software vulnerability that can steal the system password and compromise the system. This became known on August 11, 2020. Moreover, the attack almost does not require user interaction, all you need is to convince the victim to visit a malicious site.

The vulnerability, identified as CVE 2020-13699, is related to the way TeamViewer handles URI headers, which allows an attacker to force the software to send an NTLM authentication request to the attacker's system.

Simply put, a criminal can use the TeamViewer URI scheme to force an application installed on the victim's system to initiate a connection to an SMB network folder controlled by the attacker. Thus, it can cause a system name leak and NTLMv2 a hashed version of the password and log in to the victim's system.

To attack, an attacker will need to inject a malicious iframe into the website, and then force the victim to visit the resource. Then the desktop version of TeamViewer and the remote SMB folder will automatically start on the computer, when opened, the system will send an NTLM authentication request. By intercepting this request, an attacker can execute the code or use it to crack the hash.

The vulnerability affects the following URI headers: teamviewer10, teamviewer8, teamviewerapi, tvchat1, tvcontrol1, tvfiletransfer1, tvjoinv8, tvpresent1, tvsendfile1, tvsqcustomer1, tvsqsupport1, tvvideocall1, and tvvpn1.

TeamViewer developers have fixed the vulnerability with the release of updates for TeamViewer versions 8 to 15. As of August 11, 2020, there is no information about attacks that exploit this vulnerability, but given the popularity of the software, they should be expected soon[2].

Integration with Salesforce Service Cloud

On October 18, 2016, TeamViewer announced the integration of the remote management application with the Salesforce Service Cloud platform.

Hackers hacked TeamViewer user accounts

In May 2016, it became known that users of remote access software to the TeamViewer computer complain about hacking their accounts. Reports of account hacking appeared during the week on the social platform Reddit[3].
