2020: Response and termination of deliveries
In May, 2020 Volkswagen stopped deliveries of the popular Golf 8 model after detection of a problem in the software. Deliveries new were also postponed by Skoda Octavia in a number of the European countries for the same reason.
During internal investigations we defined that on the separate Golf 8 cars the management system does not provide reliable service of data on control block or the block of online connection (OCU3). As a result the complete functionality of eCall/emergency of a call of the assistant cannot be guaranteed, - it is specified in the official statement of the company. |
This software should be present at all cars sold since March, 2018 according to the legislation of the EU. This function should estimate the need for abnormal services and automatically cause them on the place of accident. Volkswagen claims that it at detection of a problem "immediately stopped deliveries of Golf 8" that "provide a full compliance" to regulations.
The same problem was revealed in the Octavia car which uses the similar software. The company announced that it is going to resume deliveries of the Golf 8 model after elimination of all shortcomings. However it was reported that software updating for elimination of a problem will appear not earlier than the third week of June.
Deliveries of Golf 8 in Germany continued within several weeks though their quantity was considerably reduced because of the restrictions imposed by COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic. Volkswagen claims that the withdrawal of software "will occur in next few days".
Trade union representatives criticized the company which allows to bring to the market cars with similar defects. Such actions, according to labor union, hurt reputation of car maker and threaten jobs.[1]
