WebScaleSQL is DBMS focused on work with large volumes of data.
On March 28, 2014 it became known of the official beginning of the WebScaleSQL project commands of the companies Facebook Google, LinkedIn and Twitter.
Project Tasks
Engineering commands Facebook Google, LinkedIn also Twitter began work on the WebScaleSQL project - the version DBMS MySQL which is going to be used in processing and storage of large volumes of data in an Internet environment. As push to project implementation, according to developers, experience of creation of reliable platforms for work of 1.23 billion people served in Facebook.
Project Progress
As reported the press services of the companies, works on WebScaleSQL began several months ago. Took MySQL of version 5.6 as a basis of future DBMS. Developers who develop MySQL take part in the project. Founders of the project expect that third-party developers will join them. By March 31, 2014 participants of WebScaleSQL prepared the system of joint writing of the code, she checks the code and announces errors.
Transition to joint development will save from duplication of work in each of the companies project participants, will simplify development process of new features and opportunities, will increase efficiency of testing. Instead of parallel development of functionality close in essence, within WebScaleSQL the most effective option will be supported. Growth of quality and code maintainability as more people will be engaged in change control is expected.
All companies presented in the project have the general feature: they service the websites with unprecedentedly high attendance: the social network Facebook totals more than one billion active users, and this indicator continues to grow.
Project Plans
In the near future, according to statements of partners, they intend to work the improved functioning of a clipboard of DBMS, to optimize work with certain data types, to support the policy of NUMA, testing system on extra-data bulks.
From yet the features which are not added in WebScaleSQL over which work is conducted, the MySQL-client's option working in an asynchronous mode is noted (allows not to wait for completion of connection setup, sending and data reception in the course of a request of MySQL); support of additional statistics for tables and data compression; completion of the implementation of a system of compression of the stored data used in Facebook and others.
