2024: Presentation of the version of the complex with the UAV control function

In mid-August 2024, NTC Elins JSC presented the ZU-23AE complex - a Soviet 23-mm anti-aircraft gun, modified to combat unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The complex is equipped with a thermal imager and remote control, and projectiles with programmable air detonation are used to destroy drones.

The ZU-23AE system is designed to combat small-sized drones. With the small dimensions of modern UAVs, direct hit in them is difficult, while the damaging effect of large ammunition becomes excessive. Thus, the use of large caliber shells and missiles is too expensive and ineffective. The new complex allows solving the problem: when several ammunition ruptures, a cloud of fragments forms, increasing the likelihood of micro- and mini-drone damage.

According to the publication "Oborona.Ru," the ZU-23AE may include up to three anti-aircraft installations. The complex is equipped with automatic target tracking facilities, a laser rangefinder and an optical-electronic unit with television and thermal imaging cameras. Thanks to this, tracking drones can be carried out in the dark or in poor visibility. Remote control is provided by the use of electric drives and electrical triggers. There is also the possibility of manual control.

In case of programmed detonation of ammunition, target detection and tracking means provide fire control system with information on position of object in space. Based on these data, the complex calculates the meeting point with the target, points an anti-aircraft assault rifle at it and sets the time of detonation. At the same time, shooting can be carried out with single and paired shots.[1]
