Western Digital began cooperation with Acronis for global deliveries of reliable infrastructure of data storage

2020: Implementation of DWH of Western Digital Ultrastar

On March 19, 2020 the Western Digital company announced that the Acronis company selected the hybrid storage system (SS) of large volume of Western Digital Ultrastar Data60 and Western Digital Ultrastar Data102 as the technological solution for data storage and implementation of long-term plans on accumulation of business activity, having made this choice proceeding from its efficiency and economic profitability. Acronis charged development of scalable architecture for deployment in 14 data processing centers (DPC) located worldwide to the technology partner – DIAWAY OÜ company which, in turn, addressed Western Digital.

For satisfaction of constantly increasing demand for data the Acronis company looked for the economic solution which would be characterized by high fault tolerance and reliably protected data at further increase in volume of storage.

Implementation of DWH of Western Digital Ultrastar allowed Acronis to finish upgrade of the most part of the global infrastructure of data storage and by that to complete the first stage of planned reorganization. As of March, 2020 the volume of the global environment of Acronis is the 220th petabyte (PByte), and the company already has plans for its further increase. Thanks to investments into the Western Digital Ultrastar platforms, Acronis not only lowered purchase costs and operation of DWH, but also simplified management of the global space of storage of large volume. Besides, it will be easier for company to plan loading and to predict costs as use of solutions of Western Digital allowed to unify global architecture of storage.

Ultrastar Data60 and Data102 are disk regiments (JBOD) with the SAS interface 12 Gbps with a high density and high capacity which contain up to 60 and 102 HDD drives respectively, from which up to 24 drives can be solid-state (SSD), in compact body 4U that provides up to 900 Tbyte and 1.5 PBytes of crude capacity respectively. These hybrid platforms of data storage are implemented on very dense disk shelves (JBOD) in which it is possible to combine variously HDD-and SSD drives for achievement of an optimal ratio of capacity, efficiency and cost. Both platforms are key components of the next generation of disaggregated and software-defined (SDS) DWH.

Thanks to experience of Western Digital "from the chip before integration", the Ultrastar Data platforms provide high reliability in the long term, and it what is necessary for clients of Acronis. In Ultrastar such innovative solutions as technology of suppression of vibration IsoVibe promoting maintenance of stable work in the conditions of high loads and technology of flux profile of cooling ArcticFlow which is responsible for effective cooling of drives that, in turn, allows to increase reliability of their work are used.
