Project History
At the end of 2009 IT department of BSH company Home appliances held testing of the plan of disaster recovery during which the unavailability of the available backup system to processing of modern amounts of data and quantity of the recovered systems came to light. The situation was aggravated by the shortage of the new equipment and the outdated park of servers.
Solution of the project
The Russian engineers together with the German colleagues considered two options of possible optimization. The first meant use of standard technologies and solutions for data backup and increase in server capacities. Its implementation would mean increase in the existing park approximately by 2.5 times, creation of the additional server room and growth of expenses on support and operation. The second option, on the contrary, assumed reduction of number of physical servers almost for 79% due to virtualization of infrastructure. For BSH concern this quite new solution tested so far only in Germany, Poland and Spain.
It required special training of IT specialists, but allowed to reduce investments almost by 70% in comparison with the first option. Owing to obvious benefit made the decision - to stop on it.
Project Progress
The park from 15 old servers was replaced with three servers integrated with two storage systems of Netapp FAS2040 on which file servers and virtual machines are placed. Solutions of Netapp are selected as give all necessary technical capabilities at optimal budget investments.
