July 1, 2025 in Japan opens the first store without cash registers and self-service terminals. The small Campus Donki outlet is located at Osaka Telecommunications University, whose main campus is in Neyagawa.
The project is being implemented by Pan Pacific International Holdings (PPIH). The IT platform is the Catch & Go digital store management solution developed by NTT Data Corporation. At Campus Donki, visitors simply scan their personal QR code, previously associated with the chosen payment method, through a special device. After the buyer has taken the goods he needs and left the store, the system automatically debits the required amount from his account and closes the transaction.
Campus Donki is aimed primarily at students. The absence of cash registers and self-service terminals significantly speeds up the purchase process, which allows you to purchase goods even during short breaks between classes. In addition, comprehensive automation has made it possible to extend the store's operating time - it receives visitors four hours longer than regular outlets of a similar format.
The Campus Donki range includes about 450 items of various products, including food, stationery, consumables, etc. Inside the store there are various sensors and cameras with artificial intelligence that recognize movements. The absence of cash registers allows you to save space. In addition, the cost of maintenance personnel is reduced. It is also possible to use dynamic pricing that takes into account factors such as current demand and the volume of balances of certain goods in the store.[1]
