2023: Use of recycled plastic trolleys

The Perekrestok retail chain began using carts made of recycled plastic. The first batch of 10 thousand plastic shopping carts has already appeared in 144 supermarkets in 11 regions of Russia. By the end of November 2023, the chain plans to scale the project to the entire network and put another 45 thousand such carts in supermarkets. The company announced this on October 18, 2023.

Especially for Perekrestok, Reklime, a full-cycle Russian company that produces finished products and plastic components, has developed eco-friendly plastic carts. For the manufacture of eco-carts, the manufacturer uses secondary raw materials, which are subsequently processed by 98%. The composition also uses polyamide and polypropylene with special additives, which allows you to ensure the reliability and frost resistance of carts even in winter. A special line for recycling plastic products and by-products is installed at the partner's production, which produces part of the raw materials for the production of plastic shopping carts, the other part of secondary plastic is supplied in the form of pellets from accredited partners.

In addition to sustainability, trolleys have other advantages. For example, plastic carts are much lighter than metal carts, weighing only 10 kilograms. They are not subject to corrosion and chemical effects, as well as more durable and less deformed upon impact. The load in the eco-cart is distributed evenly throughout the base area due to properly designed chassis, and additional handles on three sides add convenience in maneuvering and allow children to hold on to the cart while in a special chair. Also added to the design are removable hooks for personal belongings and special compartments for separating consumer goods.

Crossroads has long used the principles of sustainable development. For example, customers of the chain can purchase reusable goods (shoppers, bags and avos) in supermarkets, and some can be recycled. According to average estimates, in the first half of 2023 alone, our customers handed over more than 0.5 tons of toothbrushes and about 5.5 tons of batteries. And we, as a large retail network working with a large number of manufacturers and buyers, consider it our duty to actively implement the use of secondary materials, showing the benefits of recycling. Replacing metal with environmentally friendly plastic will make it possible not only to increase the use of secondary raw materials, but also to introduce trolleys with an improved design in our supermarkets, which will make the shopping process for Perekrestok guests more comfortable, "said Sergey Shamov, Business Support Director of Perekrestok retail chain.

The federal network was the first on the market to support our initiatives and project by integrating eco-friendly plastic shopping trolleys into its outlets. We are confident that supermarket guests will highly appreciate the level of comfort from using our product, "said Vyacheslav Bakhtiarov, CEO of Reklim.
